The Bonobo by Raes has landed – Byron Bay’s new modernist hotel and lifestyle destination
As the cooler months descend on Byron Bay, a contemporary boutique hotel with minimalist coastal style and a holistic approach to wellness has opened its doors on Jonson Street. The Bonobo by Raes, Byron’s newest modernist hotel and lifestyle destination, unites flexible accommodation and a curated mix of wellness and retail offerings, elevated by the hotel’s dedicated wellness partner, Reset. The Bonobo has arrived just in time for a much-needed winter getaway in the iconic seaside town.
Offering a more social expression of the Rae’s brand, The Bonobo’s boutique design offers guests a dynamic new way to experience elevated Byron Bay hospitality. Located in the heart of town on Jonson Street, The Bonobo has been designed to create an accessible space for people to stay, meet, dine or just pop by for a drink. Opening doors to guests in July 2026, this new lifestyle precinct encompasses dining, wellness, retail and a mesmerising rooftop pool.
The modernist three-level building has been designed by Richards & Spence, with interiors by Studio Manifold, who has created a cohesive experience that complements the building’s bold architectural form. Across The Bonobo, a focus on warmth, tactility and flow sees the use of natural timbers, soft plaster finishes, stone and layered textures creating an atmosphere of calm and understated luxury. The hotel features 33 hotel rooms, plus four one-bedroom, 28 two-bedroom and nine three-bedroom residences with generous layouts suited to both short and extended stays. All residences will feature kitchen and laundry facilities stocked with Breville appliances and pieces from its Aboriginal Culinary Journey collection.
With a dining offering curated by two-hatted Raes Dining executive chef Jason Saxby and a 50-seat Lobby Lounge, The Bonobo has been designed to flow from morning coffee through to long lunches and afternoon aperitivo. Inspired by the world’s gold standard in hotel bars and restaurants, the Lobby Lounge is made for languorous, lingering moments.

Extending its offering beyond its Double Bay studio for the first time is the hotel’s exclusive wellness partner, Reset. Designed for private and intimate small-group experiences, here you can unwind in traditional cedar saunas, ice baths, the eucalyptus steam room, a magnesium bath or a vitamin C-infused shower. There’s also a private treatment room with a service menu dedicated to LED light therapy, facials and restorative body treatments.
This traditional bathhouse experience is designed as a sequence of connected spaces, where hotel guests and Byron Bay community members can immerse themselves in an environment built for stillness. For guests and visitors inclined to move, The Circuit accommodates up to 5 clients per session, with contrast therapy rooms for private recovery.
Opening in July is the hotel’s retail experience, Atlas Homme. Within this space, guests can explore a curated edit of international and boutique brands across clothing, accessories, home decor, fragrance and travel. On the shop floor, browse luxury brands such as Tom Ford, Zegna, CAZAL, House of Creed and more.
