One of the world’s biggest and most spectacular military and cultural events – the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo – is coming to Brisbane early next year for two landmark performances.

In a major coup for Queensland, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will entertain audiences at Suncorp Stadium on February 12 and 14. Featuring more than 1000 artists, the tattoo is expected to inject up to $39 million into the Queensland economy.

The world-famous event is held annually at Edinburgh Castle and is rooted in centuries-old Scottish tradition, featuring massed pipes and drums, Highland dance and stunning displays blending military precision with performance.

Over 75 years, the event has grown to become a stadium spectacular that now travels the world, with performers representing more than 50 countries.

Now a global phenomenon, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo draws more than 230,000 spectators annually in Scotland and more than 100 million worldwide through international broadcasts. Hundreds of thousands have flocked to previous Australian tours of the tattoo in Sydney (2005, 2010, 2019) and Melbourne (2016).

The Brisbane tour is the exclusive Australian leg of the tattoo’s 75th anniversary show, The Heroes Who Made Us, celebrating the event’s rich history and spotlighting local heroes.

Since its inception in 1950, the tattoo has visited Australia on only four occasions. Premier David Crisafulli says hosting the event is a major coup for Queensland.

“The tattoo is one of the world’s most spectacular outdoor events, so attracting it to Queensland is no small feat,” says Crisafulli. “From bagpipes to bugles, Queenslanders will be able to experience the best military performances from across the globe.

“Hosting the tattoo means the eyes of the world will be fixed on our incredible state and Queensland is looking forward to putting on a show like no other.”

Environment and Tourism Minister Andrew Powell says the event will be one of the most popular ever to be staged in Queensland.

“The tattoo will be a huge drawcard for Queenslanders and interstate guests alike,” says Powell. “Bringing an event of this magnitude to Queensland provides amazing economic opportunities, which flow across the hospitality industry, small businesses and retailers.”
