The Mosquito Bowl is the newest Netflix drama to choose Queensland’s stunning natural scenery as its backdrop.
Director Peter Berg (Hancock, Lone Survivor) will begin filming the adaptation of Buzz Bissinger’s best-selling novel in August.
“The landscapes here are cinematic gold—perfect for bringing this story to life. So far, I’ve crossed paths with two kangaroos and a couple of pythons, and I’m seriously considering casting them,” Berg said.
The film will star actors Nicholas Galitzine (The Idea of You), Ray Nicholson (Novocaine), Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu) and Tom Francis (Sunset Blvd).
The Mosquito Bowl follows four American football stars pausing their careers to enlist in the Marines after the Pearl Harbor attack.
Screen Queensland, a government-owned agency dedicated to locally produced films, is backing The Mosquito Bowl. They are also supporting films including Anaconda – an upcoming film starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd – as well as Bear Country starring Russell Crowe.
Screen Queensland CEO Jacqui Feeney said The Mosquito Bowl would continue the state’s growing partnership with Netflix to deliver more Queensland-based films for worldwide audiences.
“Queensland’s screen ecosystem delivers consistently and our reputation for realising a director’s vision is second to none,” Feeney said.
Queensland is known internationally as a leading filming location, said Queensland Arts Minister John-Paul Langbroek.
“During production, The Mosquito Bowl will employ about 515 cast and crew, boosting our economy by $80 million,” Langbroek said.
This film will be the first time filming in Australian for all four actors.
Joining the cast is Bill Skarsgård a Swedish actor known for his role as Pennywise in IT and IT: Chapter Two (2017 & 2019). He recently also starred in the horror movie Nosferatu (2024).
Nicholas Galitzine is an English actor whose roles include Red, White & Royal Blue (2023), Bottoms (2023) and The Idea of You (2024). He has two other films releasing later this year, Masters of the Universe and 100 Nights of Hero.
Ray Nicholson is an American actor and son of actors Jack Nicholson and Rebecca Broussard. His previous work includes Smile 2 (2024) and Novocaine (2025).
Tom Francis is an English actor and singer who has worked on the stages of Broadway and West End. He acted in productions of Rent, Hair and Sunset Boulevard, as well as the film Jay Kelly (2025).
Peter Berg will film The Mosquito Bowl for his production company Film 44, along with Brian Grazer for Imagine Entertainment and Alex Gayner. Peter Berg and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Twisters) wrote the script for the film. Ezra Emmanuel is the Executive Producer.
Debra Richards, Director of Production Policy at APAC at Netflix, thanked Screen Queensland and the state and federal government for supporting the upcoming production.
“Queensland consistently punches above its weight in attracting world class screen productions. We’re proud to bring another major Netflix title to the state,” Richards said.
