Adelaide 36ers centre Ben Griscti suffered a fractured neck when a backboard collapsed on him at the NBL Blitz.

Griscti will miss the start of the NBL season after scans revealed a fractured vertebrae in his neck.

He was injured when a backboard collapsed during the 36ers’ shoot-around on Saturday before their last game in the pre-season tournament in Canberra.

“Scans have since confirmed the 23-year-old has suffered a fractured vertebrae but he won’t require surgery and is expected to make a full recovery,” the 36ers said in a statement on Monday.

“He has travelled home to Adelaide and a timeline for him to return to the court will not be set until he is able to get further medical advice to determine the next steps around the management of the injury.”

Griscti, a South Australian-born big-man who made his NBL debut last season, was hurt when a teammate’s dunk broke the backboard and brought the structure down.

The NBL has launched an investigation into the backboard collapse at the AIS Arena.
