A Qantas Airways flight from Sydney has landed safely at Auckland airport after a mayday call from the pilot led to emergency services being activated.

Emergency services rushed to Auckland Airport after a reports of fire on the plane, New Zealand media outlets reported.

Sixteen fire trucks from the Auckland area responded to the incident.

“We have received reports a Qantas flight from Sydney had a fire on board,” a spokesperson from St John Ambulance of New Zealand said in a statement.

The pilot of the Boeing 737 made a mayday call and requested an emergency landing after an indicator light was flashing in the cargo section, but there was no sign of smoke in the aircraft, the spokesperson said.

There were 156 passengers on board, the spokesperson said.

Auckland airport said in a statement that emergency services were on standby or an inbound aircraft that reported issues.

“The airfield is now returning to normal but there may be some slight delays for departing and arriving flights,” it said.
