New milestone for youth homelessness housing in regional Qld
Progress has been made on the construction of housing for young people experiencing homelessness in regional Queensland.
The Queensland Government today announced the release of tenders for two new ‘Youth Foyers’ and additional youth homelessness support for young people in the Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton.
The foyers – units and apartments – will provide stable housing for 16- to 25-year-olds experiencing or at risk of homelessness who are also committed to study, training or work.
The first will be built in Maroochydore and will provide 50 self-contained units, while the Rockhampton Foyer will add another 40 options for young Queenslanders.
Across both foyers, tenants will be required to pay around 25 per cent of their income in rent and will receive 24/7 on-site support while they complete education, training or work.
These developments are part of the government’s plan to deliver 53,500 social and community homes by 2044, with eight ‘Youth Foyers’ to be rolled out across Queensland.

The other ‘Youth Foyers’ will be delivered in Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba and Cairns, on top of existing builds in Townsville, Logan and the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Youth Foyer is located in Southport and will provide 40 fully furnished apartments eligible for participants for up to 24 months.
The foyer stipulates ineligibility for couples, active drug users, and those with unmanaged health conditions, histories of violence, inability to live independently, having close connections to people likely to put others in the Foyer at risk and inability to cope with high-density living environments.
Minister for Housing Sam O’Connor said these new builds would deliver a safe place to call home for young people struggling across Queensland.

“We’re getting on with the job of delivering a new Youth Foyer on the Sunshine Coast, giving at-risk young Queenslanders the stability, support and opportunities they need to finish their education and/or training, or get into work and build independent lives,” O’Connor said.
He added that the eight new ‘Youth Foyer’ projects would be completed or underway by 2028.
Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson said the Sunshine Coast Youth Foyer would provide life-changing wraparound support for vulnerable people across the region.
“Our new Youth Foyer will give young people in our region a place to call home and the support they need to stay in education, find a job, and learn the skills they need to build a brighter future,” Simpson said.
A public notification process for the Sunshine Coast Youth Foyer is now underway, allowing the community to have their say on the project.
Member for Rockhampton Donna Kirkland said it was fantastic to see another milestone reached with the construction tender now open.
“This is another example of the Crisafulli Government listening to locals and delivering the services and infrastructure Rockhampton needs.”
