The Guardians of the Shift: The Coral Quest is described as a middle-grade eco-adventure story blending fantasy and real-world ecological issues which aims to inspire hope and awareness about climate change among readers aged eight to 14 years. Today the book, written by a 13-year-old Queenslander, is being launched at parliament house in Brisbane.

Hailed as ‘Australia’s Next David Attenborough’, Queensland author Arshaan Ameer has received a personal letter from David Attenborough himself that expresses support for Arshaan’s work and the importance of addressing climate change.

The young filmmaker and environmental advocate is a student at the Southport School on the Gold Coast and has already been recognised as one of the youngest documentary writers and directors in Australia for his documentary Generation Green, which addresses climate change and earned him a certificate from the Australian Book of Records.

The Guardians of the Shift: The Coral Quest follows the journey of Leon Ascanius navigating an ocean-based fantasy world connected to the Great Barrier Reef.

Arshaan said that his narrative aimed to spread awareness of climate change in a positive and encouraging way to ensure the message resonates with families and educators.

“I want to spread hope, not fear, about climate change,” said Ameer.

“My book is designed to inspire young readers to take action and understand the importance of marine conservation and environmental awareness.”

The novel, which Ameer wrote himself, has been professionally edited and illustrated, and self-published in collaboration with Clark and Mackay.

The book launch is scheduled for this afternoon at the Speakers Hall at Queensland Parliament House Annex, with key political figures in attendance.

Those expected at the launch include Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation Minister Andrew Powell, member for Coomera Michael Crandon, 2024 LNP candidate for Gaven Bianca Stone and Queensland president for UNAA Claire Moore.

“I dream of a day when this book finds its place in every library and becomes a part of the Australian school curriculum,” Ameer said.

“I believe that through storytelling, we can ignite a passion for environmental stewardship in young minds, empowering them to become the guardians of our planet’s future.”

Ameer actively engages with audiences through his website and social media platforms, highlighting his storytelling, filmmaking and environmental advocacy.

He is also currently working on the first novel in a three-book series, while also exploring the possibility of creating a documentary.

He has also founded his Generation Green foundation, which aimed to foster a movement for change and develop a climate action plan.

Ameer’s mother Dr Tanya Unni, father Dr Ameer Hamza, and ten-year-old brother Armaan are actively involved in Ameer’s initiatives.
