QUT appoints establishing editor for recently acquired Meanjin journal

Following the news of QUT’s recent acquisition of Meanjin after its closure last year, the university has appointed Dr Ashley Hay as the journal’s managing editor.

Dr Hay is a former editor of Griffith Review and a respected figure in Australia’s literary publishing community.

Dr Ashley Hay has been appointed Establishing Editor of Meanjin by QUTGuiding Meanjin’s transition to QUT, Dr Hay will oversee the publication’s operations for the next 12 months while also supporting the recruitment of a permanent editor.

Dr Hay said the opportunity carries both responsibility and excitement.

“There’s an extraordinary privilege in being invited to help establish a well-known and highly regarded journal in a new home,” Dr Hay said. “We’re looking forward to being back in touch with Meanjin‘s readers and writers, and to re-establishing partnerships while we build new connections and opportunities as well.”

Meanjin will resume regular publication of new work online later this year, with a physical edition planned for late 2026 to mark the journal’s 85th volume.

Further announcements are expected in coming months, with the recruitment of a permanent editor anticipated before the end of the year.

The Empire theatre welcomes new chair and board appointments

The Empire announced a renewed direction and significant board refresh with the appointment of David Taplin as chair of the board of Empire Theatres Pty Ltd.

The four new board director appointees include Jade Gardiner, David Chick, Fiona Gaske and Brett Bramwell, who all commenced their roles on Friday April 17.

The appointments bring a diverse mix of commercial, governance and cultural expertise, ensuring continued operational strength, creative impact and strong community connection for the company.

The Empire CEO Guiliana Bonel welcomed the new appointments while paying tribute to outgoing chair Andrew Wielandt, who retires after 19 years.

“Under Andrew’s guidance, The Empire solidified its standing as a cultural cornerstone across the region, an institution that supports artists, engages audiences and forges enduring creative, community and commercial partnerships,” Bonel said.

Bonel also extended to her gratitude to Janelle Fletcher, Jim O’Dea, John Pearson, Kris Stewart and Suzie Byrnes who are stepping down as Board Directors.

The independent recruitment process was conducted by the company in partnership with Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC), with the appointments announced at a Special Meeting on Tuesday April 14.

IBA launches office to measure the Indigenous-led economy

On April 30, the Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) launched the Office of the Indigenous Economy (OTIE) to monitor and track the value and shape of the country’s Indigenous-led economic activity.

Stepping into the role as Australia’s first-ever chief economist for the Indigenous economy is Dr Siddharth Shirodkar.

Shirodkar has worked as an economist and academic in public policy for almost two decades, working in data analysis, policy, innovation and economic opportunity for First Nations people.

An advisory panel will support the Office, made up of members Vanessa Elliot AM, Professor Dean Sanders OAM, Professor Kerry Arabena, Alan Oster, Professor Doug McTaggart and Darren Godwell.

The Office will monitor, record and publish economic data and intelligence, and examine investment flows, demographic impacts and eventually develop Australia’s first measure of Indigenous GDP.

OTIE will collaborate with the Australian Bureau of Statistics to build new data tools and work with partners across government, the private sector and academia, publishing accurate estimates of the Indigenous economy activity.

IBA Chairman Darren Godwell said, “The Office of the Indigenous Economy is designed tocollate and publish critical economic data that details Indigenous people’s contributions to the Australian economy.

ASX appoints non-executive director

The Star Entertainment Group Limited announced on April 16 the appointment of Grant Bowie as a non-executive director of the company.

Subject to all regulatory and ministerial approvals being obtained, Bowie will be an observer to The Star Board.

His previous roles include executive roles at Hilton Hotels Corporation in Australia for 16 years, the last five years of which he was responsible for overseeing gaming and hospitality operations on the Gold Coast and in Brisbane.

Bowie also worked for Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts in Macau, where he was responsible for overall leadership, management, strategic development and expansion of these companies.

The Star’s chairman Soo Kim welcomed Grant’s appointment to the board.

“I would like to welcome Grant to the Board and look forward to working with him to assist in delivering our strategic objectives and creating a sustainable future for The Star.”

Central Highlands Regional Council continues search for next CEO

The Central Highlands Regional Council is committed to keeping the community updated regarding its ongoing search for its next CEO.

Mayor Janice Moriarty said: “Over the past few days, (the) council has continued to have conversations with the community and it’s been made especially clear that there is great importance in ensuring the process undertaken to the find the next CEO is transparent, and must not be rushed.”

Gary Stevenson is currently seconded to the council from his advisory business, having offered his availability to support the council as acting CEO until Monday May 18, as per the council’s original resolution.

To ensure the recruitment process is not rushed, the council is required to hold a special meeting on Monday May 11 to appoint an acting CEO.

“Gary is doing outstanding work, as are the entire council team via this transition period, ensuring business as usual in the delivery of essential services to our community including roads, water supply, wastewater treatment, rubbish collection and focusing on great customer service,” Mayor Moriarty said.
