A 79-year-old Victorian man has been charged by Queensland police for allegedly claiming to be a returned Australian soldier and wearing service decorations that were not allocated to him.

Police say the man attended a Vietnam Veterans Day event in Gin Gin in August 2024, where he claimed to have been deployed to Vietnam between 1964 and 1967.

It is alleged he wore multiple medals awarded to members of the Australian Defence Force who had served in Vietnam at the event.

But police say the man, from Dalysford, did not spend any days overseas during his service with the Australian Army.

He has since been charged with one count each of falsely representing to be a returned soldier, and improper use of service decorations.

The man is expected to appear in Bundaberg Magistrates Court in September.
