Stage debuts, sleuths and Sondheim – Queensland Theatre Company’s 2027 season is shaping up to be one for the books

The state’s largest theatre company is gearing up for a massive year of unmissable productions. QTC has announced details of its 2027 program, revealing a jam-packed schedule featuring contemporary interpretations of ancient epics, Shakespeare classics reimagined through First Nations storytelling, murder mysteries, Tony Award-nominated classics, and celebrated Australian works. We’re seated. You should be too.

It’s a hard task following up on the blockbuster season that Queensland Theatre Company has delivered in 2026, but by the looks of things, 2027 is shaping up to be a bigger and bolder year for Brisbane stages.

QTC artistic director Daniel Evans is flexing his curatorial muscles, filling his second season with eight productions, many of which are world or Australian premieres.

Leading QTC’s 2027 season will be An Iliad, a transformation of Homer’s ancient epic. Starring award-winning actor David Wenham (reprising his role of the narrator afer a sold-out Sydney Theatre Company season), An Iliad will explore the endless cycle of war and the legacy of violence from the Trojan War to today.

Up next, QTC head of First Nations theatre Isaac Drandic and Kamarra Bell-Wykes will rework Shakespeare’s most famous love story for Romeo + Juliet. The world-first production will see an ensemble of local Blak performers and designers putting a First Nations lens to the tale, blending Shakespeare’s text with Turrbal language, song and movement to infuse The Bard’s text with ancestral memory.

In April, QPAC’s Playhouse will host the world premier of Death by Deck Chair: A Miss Fisher Murder Mystery. Created by Deb Cox and Fiona Eagger (the brains behind the internationally beloved television series Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries), this original adventure has been written for the stage and will see Phryne Fisher and Detective Inspector Jack Robinson solving a brand-new murder mystery.

The most Tony Award-nominated play in Broadway history will make its Australian premiere in May, when David Adjmi’s fly-on-the-wall docu-drama Stereophonic lands at QPAC. Directed by Dan Evans, the play follows five musicians on the cusp of superstardom, offering insight into the pitfalls of creative genius, encapsulated in a 1970s Californian recording studio.

One of Australia’s most celebrated plays – S. Shakthidharan’s Counting and Cracking – will arrive on Queensland stages in late-May, with Eamon Flack directing a sweeping tale of love, political strife, home and exile that spans four generations and two countries.

The Bille Brown Theatre will transform into the grimy, gruesome world of Victorian London for QTC’s immersive new production of Stephen Sondheim’s musical masterpiece, Sweeny Todd. Daniel Evans and Bridget Boyle will direct, while Naomi Price will step into the role of Mrs Lovett alongside Andy Conaghan, a rising Rockhampton musical star making his QTC mainstage debut.

If you like dark comic political satire, you’ll find lots to love in My Roman Empire. The creation of QPDA winner Alberto Di Troia (who has recent credits including Netflix’s The Survivors), weaves a tale of familial discovery with heart, humour and harrowing ancestral revelations.

Rounding out the 2027 season is a spirited new adaptation of Little Women, with award-winning playwrights Maxine Mellor and Kathryn Marquet infusing Louisa May Alcott’s story of the March sisters with fresh energy, redefining the story of sisterhood for the Playhouse stage.
