Renovations of InterContinental Brisbane will commence this October, with a competition date set for late 2027. Until then, here’s what we know …
The transformation will see all of the hotel’s elements, from guest experience and interiors to public spaces and hospitality offerings refreshed and infused with effortless elegance and timeless luxury. Drawing inspiration from Brisbane’s distinctive energy and evolving nature, the new interpretation will revive the building from the ground up to position InterContinental Brisbane as a vanguard of Brisbane’s luxury hospitality scene. The sophisticated interpretation will see the hotel enter a new era of luxury inspired by the work of Harry Seidler, the Austrian-Australian design icon who was one of the pioneers of the Bauhaus and Modernist styles in Australia.
The transformation will be led by global design firm Woods Bagot, the designers behind both InterContinental Sydney and InterContinental Sydney Coogee Beach, who will honour the legacy of the building’s original architect, Harry Seidler. Woods Bagot Principal, Tracey Wiles said the redesign will carefully craft an experience that balances both art and technology whilst serving both spirit and senses.
“Seidler’s legacy provided a framework for both clarity and rigour, while Brisbane’s subtropical character allowed us to overlay warmth, lightness and a sense of ease, resulting in an experience that is sophisticated, welcoming and distinctly modern,” Tracey said.
The centrepiece of InterContinental’s new look will be the grand atrium, reworked to incorporate organic connections to light and nature for all 324 rooms (up from 319), plus a view down to a reimagined atrium footprint. Meanwhile the rooms themselves will be designed for oversized comfort, enhanced by a rich colour scheme including warm neutrals with natural stone and highlights of marble and dark timber. Details of geometric patterning, softly curved sculptural art and mid-century style will ground the renovation’s aesthetic in it’s Modernist inspirations.
Club InterContinental will relocate to level 6, where an all-new concierge gallery, upgraded arrival area, lobby and reception will give the hotel a refreshed central point in line with InterContinental brand standards. With a focus on wellbeing, a state-of-the-art gym, spa, reimagined pool deck area and wellness offering will reflect the city’s connection to outdoor living and subtropical nature.
A new Argentinian-inspired grill restaurant and intimate Italian pasta and wine bar will enhance InterContinental Brisbane’s dining experience, complemented by a lobby bar reimagined as one of the hotel’s signature destinations and unique gathering places.
InterContinental Brisbane will remain open during its staged renovation project, with the brand committed to delivering its standard quality of service, experiences and hospitality throughout.
InterContinental Brisbane general manager Shaun Parsons said the hotel is looking forward to unveiling a contemporary hospitality experience that captivates the imaginations of today’s luxury travellers.
“Located at Brisbane’s most coveted luxury address, with unrivalled access to the city’s leading luxury retail, dining and cultural precincts, the reimagined hotel will be ideally positioned to welcome guests for the 2027 Rugby World Cup and as Brisbane looks ahead to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
Our vision is to reimagine this local icon while paying homage to the iconic Harry Seidler building, bringing together exceptional design, approachable luxury and culturally rich experiences that reflect Brisbane’s vibrant spirit,” Shaun said.
