From news of a charming rainforest-ensconced cafe in Mount Nebo to a new espresso bar for Gordon Park, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Fallow
Surrounded by bushland and rainforest, Mount Nebo Village has long been a picturesque pit stop for road trippers. But soon, those passing through will have a reason to stop and linger, with a charming new cafe called Fallow set to open in a few months’ time. Owned and operated by a husband-and-wife team who moved to the area in 2023, Fallow will see the couple transform the site previously home to Cafe Boombana and Cafe in the Mountains. Envisioned as a family-friendly eatery for visitors and a home away from home for the Mount Nebo community, Fallow is leaning into its name, offering guests a tranquil place to rest. A DIY renovation is currently underway – one that aims to highlight the venue’s existing character while blending seamlessly with its leafy surroundings. Inside, the space will receive a cosmetic refresh, leaning into natural textures like timber, while the courtyard will be updated with new plants and coffee tables. As for the menu, Fallow will offer simple, wholesome, and nourishing food made with love – think home-style baked treats, chunky toasties and vegan soft-serve ice-cream. The menu will cater to various dietary requirements, with plenty of gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and peanut-free options expected to feature. The café will also serve specialty coffee and classic Devonshire tea. Fallow is targeting an opening date in late July or early August—stay tuned for updates!
Goldie Espresso
Brisbane’s northside suburb of Gordon Park will soon welcome a fresh-faced coffee slinger, with Goldie Espresso on track to open on Thistle Street next month. The brainchild of Morgan Elliott – a HR professional returning to hospitality after years in the corporate world – Goldie Espresso aims to offer locals an inviting spot to enjoy great coffee, food and atmosphere. The espresso bar will serve a tight menu of no-fuss favourites – simple food with a bit of flair, made using produce from quality local suppliers. Specialty coffee from Toby’s Estate will be on offer, alongside matcha, granola bowls, sourdough toast, pastries and cookies. As for the space, Goldie’s will boast a relaxed aesthetic imbued with warmth, including handcrafted Moroccan tiles from Jatana Interiors, rustic timber accents, and earthy tones. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Goldie Espresso in June.
Free cheeseburgers at Crowbar
In case you didn’t know, tomorrow – Wednesday May 28 – is International Burger Day. If you’re keen to celebrate, the crew at Crowbar in Fortitude Valley is a great place to do it. From 11:00 am to 4:00 pm (or while stocks last), Crowbar’s in-house eatery Ultimate Pig will be giving away 100 free cheeseburgers with any purchase (fries, beer or soft drink). Boasting a smash patty of dry-aged beef, lashings of mustard and ketchup, onion, pickles and American cheese (as well as vegan substitutions), these beauties are well worth lining up for. See you there?
