From news of refurbishment plans for a storied bayside fish market to a coastal Mediterranean-inspired restaurant for Manly, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Wynnum Creek Fish Market
A prominent piece of Wynnum’s waterfront real estate could soon be reborn as a multifaceted hospitality hub boasting a restaurant, rooftop space and takeaway shop. Last month, a development application was lodged seeking approval to refurbish and enhance a long-vacant site on Fox Street, previously home to Wynnum Creek Fish Market. The application, lodged by Willowtree Planning on behalf of Unlimited Possibilities Pty Ltd, include plans to transform the former seafood market – long recognised as a landmark of the bayside community – into a new dining venue. Plans by ThinkTank Architects gives insight into the proposed enhancements, which includes a two-level restaurant boasting indoor and alfresco dining, an upper-level function space and a roof terrace, plus a small takeaway fish and chip shop accessed via Fox Street. A cross-section of the community has been engaged to offer feedback, with the plans communicating a local desire to see the site revitalised and integrated with surrounding green space, while also acknowledging the site’s historical significance. Olivera
Speaking of Brisbane’s bayside, Manly is also the recipient of a brand-new restaurant from The Consortium Qld, the group behind local institutions The Arsonist and Wang Chung. Last week, the team opened light-filled eatery Olivera on the corner of Cambridge Parade and the Esplanade. Offering a refined take on Mediterranean cuisine, Olivera matches its bayside location with a menu that takes cues from sun-drenched coastal regions of Europe. Head chef Sean Garrett, whose resume includes stints at Aria and Becasse in Sydney, and The Ledbury in Notting Hill, will be serving up a bounty of local produce across a menu that features bites and small plates, plus larger share-style offerings. Highlights include southern rock lobster linguine with a bisque reduction, blistered cherry tomatoes and fresh basil, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with caramelised yoghurt, silverbeet, smoked olive and rosemary jus, and flame-kissed octopus with romesco and smoked almond. Olivera’s drinks program will be led by a clutch of signature cocktails, including the Chamomile Daiquiri and Fig Old Fashioned. We’ll be taking a closer look at Olivera soon – be sure to check back for more.
Dice & Dine Jackpot at Longwang
Are you feeling lucky? If you think fortune is on your side, Longwang should be your next dinner destination. The slender, Asian-inspired inner-city restaurant is giving diners the chance to eat for free – but there’s just one catch. To mark the changing of seasons and the end of the financial year, every table seated between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm on weekdays during the month of June will roll a pair of dice. If you’re lucky enough to roll double sixes, the meal is completely free. That’s right – Longwang will pick up the tab. The Dice & Dine Jackpot is limited to one set of dice per table (provided to guests at the end of their meal) and valid for all tables seating up to ten people.
Salud
Nestled on Haig Road, cafe and restaurant Salud has emerged as a favourite amongst Auchenflower locals. The Latin and Spanish-inspired eatery has largely flown under the radar since opening in February, quietly building a following with dishes like churro waffles with chocolate-caramel sauce, saffron-scented paella bowls, chorizo patatas bravas and brekkie tacos. But now one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets is gearing up to make itself known with the launch of its brand-new nighttime service. Salud will open its doors from 5:00 pm this Friday and Saturday, inviting all comers to enjoy a new menu of Latin-inspired tapas (we’re talking Spanish-style jamon and bechamel croquettes, chorizo-stuffed tacos, and cheese plates), alongside beers, wines and margaritas. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Salud soon!
