From a new Mexican-inspired pop-up by the C’est Bon crew to a new pooch-friendly cafe in The Valley, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Birria Boy
This Friday October 17, the crew behind Woolloongabba’s celebrated French restaurant C’est Bon will debut a new pop-up concept next door called Birria Boy. Taking over the space recently vacated by Clarence, C’est Bon’s head chef Andy Ashby is looking to inject a bit of colour and energy into the Stanley Street strip, implementing a culinary concept inspired by West Coast Mexican cuisine with woodfired meats as its focal point. As one can surmise by the name, Birria Boy will specialise in birria tacos, with three kinds of available – including a 15-hour wagyu beef birria, goat birria (made using slow-cooked Meredith goats that are butchered in house) and woodfire-braised mushroom birria with Oaxacan cheese. The birria tacos will be joined by a selection of snacks, such as roasted corn ribs, rellenos (woodfired jalapeno stuffed with pork chorizo), yellowfin tuna belly tostadas and lamb al pastor skewers. On the mains front, Birria Boy will serve a trio of share-style dishes, including pork neck with mole negro, butterflied chicken asado and tamale-style Murray cod wrapped in banana leaf – all served with house-made masa tortillas and sauces. Margaritas will also be a specialty, with a selection of tequila and mezcal on deck for the agave addicts. The space has been refreshed with terracotta tones, neon light fixtures and a new burgundy-tiled bar, with Andy aiming to instil a casual and approachable atmosphere, energising the strip and supporting neighbouring venues. Navy & Oak will be pet friendly – so bring your furry four-legged friends!

Navy & Oak
Fortitude Valley-based flat white sippers will soon have a new pick-me-up pit stop to add to their rotation. Navy & Oak, a beatific pet-friendly brunch spot from chef Bowyo Muangsong (owner of Ma Chim and former head chef of Morning After) is set to open at the 100 Ann precinct before the end of October. Looking to create a go-to destination for families (those with human children and the furry four-legged variety), Navy & Oak will offer something for all tastes and needs, including specialty coffee from Five Senses, playful brunch dishes with Thai inflections and treats for pups. Taking over the space previously home to Buzz Cafe, the 60-seat venue will offer a mix of indoor and outdoor seating, as well as a cool and calm aesthetic that blends midnight blue with timber. Navy & Oak will softly open to the public on Wednesday October 29, with opening day discounts on the cards from 10:00 am onwards. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Navy & Oak later this month.

Thai Boi Redcliffe
In great news for Moreton Bay residents, one of Brisbane’s finest exponents of Thai cuisine is expanding to the Redcliffe peninsula in the coming weeks. Thai Boi will be opening its new outpost (its third, following sites in East Brisbane and Wynnum) next to Arcade Wine in the heritage-listed Comino’s Arcade on Redcliffe Parade, transforming a 94-sqm space into an eatery inspired by 1970s Thailand – think vibrant pops of colour, nostalgic details and retro street vibes. Thai Boi Redcliffe’s menu will feature the venue’s beloved signatures (including Kanlaya’s paneang curry, Samui duck curry, Queen Barra salad and Joe’s Fried Chicken), as well as reimagined classics created by chef Tofu Nunyoi, such as tuna sashimi with Thai-style chimichurri and Northeast Thai-style duck tacos. Thai Boi will be offering BYO until its liquor licence is approved.

Morning After
Last week, we shared word that West End brunch institution Morning After was celebrating a decade of operation. In addition to a slick new merch collection, the cafe will be celebrating with a free coffee giveaway. If you are in the neighbourhood tomorrow morning, Wednesday October 15, Morning After will be giving away 150 free coffees from 7:00 am on a first come, first serve basis. Be sure to get in quick or risk missing out!
