From news of a inner-city restaurant serving northern-Vietnamese cuisine to a new brunch and sandwich spot in Teneriffe, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Annamese Vietnamese
Tomorrow night, the team behind Wilston’s Ming Ming’s Kitchen and Pho-Real Vietnamese in Augustine Heights will cut the ribbon on a brand-new member of its portfolio in Annamese. Showcasing the flavours, character and dining style of northern Vietnam, Annamese (located on Level 2 of Brisbane Quarter, 300 George Street in The City) sees the team delivering a more elevated dining experience while still offering cuisine that is approachable, honest and expressive. Diners can sit down and devour an extensive menu of northern-Vietnamese flavours – dishes with a distinct identity defined by balance, freshness and subtle depth. Highlight menu items include mud crab and pork spring rolls, bò sốt vang (Vietnamese beef stew), hịt kho (Hanoi-style slow-cooked pork belly), chả cá lã vọng (turmeric pan-fried barramundi) and cơm rang dưa bò (wagyu beef fried rice). These plates are joined by a selection of tantalising signature cocktails, wines by the glass and a clutch of Vietnamese and domestic beers. As for the space, Annamese’s design draws inspiration from traditional northern-Vietnamese architecture – think dark timbers and red brick textures, with a sense of character that evokes the old neighbourhoods of Hanoi. Keen to check it out? Head to the Annamese website to make a booking ahead of its opening.

Cult Coffee
Teneriffe’s cafe scene will expand later this month with the official debut of Cult Coffee – the suburb’s newest home of killer caffeine and classic brunch. The brainchild of hospo veteran Billy and marketing pro Georgie, Cult Coffee sees the duo striking out with the goal of becoming one of the city’s top coffee spots. Cult Coffee will inhabit an existing cafe space on Commercial Road, with Billy and Georgie instilling a fresh and warm aesthetic boasting light-pink tones with metallic accents. Once open, Cult Coffee will serve an all-day breakfast menu (think elevated basics) and a selection of seriously stacked lunch sandwiches, plus the good stuff from Coffee Supreme. Cult Coffee is expected to open just before Christmas – keep your eyes peeled for word on its official launch party in January, which will feature free coffee, pastries and DJ sets.

La Macelleria x Zini Gelato
Summer is here, which means it’s officially gelato season. To mark the arrival of warm weather, La Macelleria Gelateria is is introducing Brisbane to a brand-new concept in the form of Zini Contemporary Gelateria. The personal brand of La Macelleria founder Matteo Zini, Zini Contemporary Gelateria is taking a more colourful approach compared to La Macelleria’s classic leanings, gathering international influences and infusing them into what is described as a healthier, environmentally conscious and modern approach to the gelato experience. Zini Contemporary Gelateria has launched pop-up store at 172 Grey Street in South Bank, slinging scoops made using ingredients like organic spirulina, uji matcha imported from Japan, dulce de leche from Argentina, Dubai chocolate and more. Zini Contemporary Gelateria will be hosting a grand-opening celebration on Sunday December 21, with free scoops to the first 100 guests and $5 regular cups all day long.

Jane’s Deli
In late October, we broke word that the team behind Korean-inspired cafe and wine bar Snug was expanding with two new concepts opening right next door. Well, we can confirm that the first of these newcomers – sandwich, smoothie and specialty goods dispensary Jane’s Deli – is officially opening to the public this Friday at 7:00 am. We’ve been told to expect a range of crowd-pleasing sambos (including classics and some inventive riffs) alongside ingredient-packed smoothies and filter coffee from ST. ALi. There will also be shelves stocked with gourmet pantry items on offer. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Jane’s Deli later this week.
Bianco Italian Restaurant & Bar
This weekend, Caloundra’s newest luxury apartment development – BIANCO by RCQ – will welcome its newest resident in the form of Bianco Italian Restaurant & Bar on Saturday December 13. Operated by seasoned restaurateur Ibrahim Haddad (Il Verde in Bowen Hills), Bianco will give Caloundra residents the chance to indulge in a taste of Italy via a sophisticated menu featuring classic pasta dishes, pizza contemporanea (made using high-hydration doughs with a longer fermentation period) and seasonal small plates. The restaurant will also be partnering with local wine importer Convivium Wine to curate a program showcasing Italian and Mediterranean vino (including premium wines poured via Coravin, rotating wine flights and tasting experiences) alongside a signature cocktail menu. Bookings are now live – head to Bianco’s website to snag a seat ahead of this weekend’s launch.
