From news of the opening date of Tassis Group’s newest venue to a bayside expansion for one of Brisbane’s best burger slingers, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Aunty
After much anticipation, one of the year’s most exciting new restaurants has announced its official opening date. Tassis Group will cut the ribbon on Aunty on Thursday February 5, opening the doors to the Asian-inspired restaurant, which has been quietly taking shape on Wandoo Street in Fortitude Valley. The 400-sqm dining destination will offer approximately 100 guests a place to enjoy intimate moments and lavish outings, with a rich interior scheme of deep green banquettes, timbers and marble surfaces offering subtle nods to mahjong tiles. Aunty’s kitchen will be pumping out a menu laced with modern Asian inspirations, with signature dishes like whole chilli mudcrab, half duck two ways and char siu pork neck available alongside a dedicated dim sum menu. A 250-label wine list and original cocktails inspired by Asian spirits round out the experience, with an approachable lunch offering and daily happy hours adding to the fun. Once open, Aunty will trade from 11:30 am to late, seven days a week. Bookings have launched – head to the Aunty website to secure a table.

Mr Jeebus
Attention all bayside burger lovers – one of Brisbane’s best patty flippers is set to open a brand-new location in Deception Bay. The crew behind Mr Jeebus (formerly known as Benz on Miller) is putting the finishing touches on a site on Mariner Boulevard, which will officially open to the public on Wednesday February 4. Once trading, Moreton Bay locals can swoop in to sample the full Mr Jeebus menu. Leading the offering will be the brand’s signature burgers, including the namesake Sweet Baby Jeebus (Wild Turkey-maple-glazed fried chicken, bacon, cheese, lettuce and mayo) and the BZ Mack (beef patty, double cheese, special sauce, iceberg lettuce, pickles and white onion). These hefty two-handers are joined by a suite of sides (including loaded fries, traditional poutine and fried chicken tenders) and decadent shakes. Once open, the Deception Bay location will join Mr Jeebus’ existing locations in Eagle Farm and Tingalpa, as well as the brand’s roaming food truck. Keep your eyes peeled for more.

Meat at Billy’s
Over the long weekend, one of Brisbane’s most well-regarded butchers, Meat at Billy’s, opened its third store. The new butcher can be found at Woolloongabba’s South/City/SQ, with owner Billy Gibney finally giving fans south of the river a place to get their hands on some seriously primo protein. The brand-new store is strongly reminiscent of Meat at Billy’s Ashgrove and Paddington outlets, with glossy black, white and orange subway tiles accented by a worn brick counter. Like its sibling sites, Meat at Billy’s Woolloongabba is amply stocked with premium grass-fed steaks, dry-aged beef, gourmet sausages, boutique Australian smallgoods and farm-direct local produce, with suppliers like Bellevue Dorpers, Ryukyu Pork, Shimo Wagyu, 9Dorf Farms and Rangelands featuring on the shelves and in fridges. The site will also be a go-to for time-poor customers, with ready-to-cook meals, pantry staples and boutique wine and spirits also available.

Lune’s Tennis Ball
With the Australian Open in full swing (pun intended), Lune is getting into the action with an extra-special limited-edition item sure to be a straight-sets smash. The top-tier pastry maker recently linked up with Tuckshop by Incu to create Tennis Ball – a cross-laminated pastry filled with a lime condensed milk custard and lime syrup. Crowning the pastry is a white-chocolate cheesecake mousse dome with a lime glaze and lime-green cookie crumb. After an exclusive pop-up debut, the Tennis Ball is now available at all Lune venues – including its South Brisbane and Burnett stores – until Sunday February 1.
