Clear the esky and cue the country playlist – the Scenic Rim Farm Gate Trail is back, and it’s your chance to taste your way through one of Queensland’s most celebrated food regions.
Returning on Sunday March 29 (and again on Sunday July 26), the Scenic Rim Farm Gate Trail sees farmers, producers, winemakers, brewers and distillers across the region throw open their gates from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. It’s a rare chance to step behind the scenes of one of Queensland’s most celebrated food bowls, chat directly with the people who grow and make what you eat and drink, and stock the esky while you’re at it.
With 24 farms and on-farm experiences participating in March – including a couple of exciting newcomers – the day is designed as a choose-your-own-adventure. You can follow one of the curated itineraries to keep drive time low, or map out your own route using the Farm Gate Trail map. Either way, expect overflowing larders filled with freshly picked produce, jams and chutneys made with love, olives, cheese, and honey. Add farm walks, wine tastings, gin flights, beer sips, flower farm fun, lamb pats, alpaca cuddles and goat giggles, and you’ve got a very full day ahead.
Among the new additions is Northview Highlands, opening its gates for the first time and inviting visitors to meet its shaggy Highland cattle, Valais Blacknose sheep and charming pygmy goats. The region’s newest brewery, Boonah Brewing Co, joins the trail with free brewery tours (bookings recommended), offering a refreshing stop on the map. Meanwhile, Ellia’s Garden debuts a brand-new hay bale maze – mountain views included.
Not sure where to start? You can check out a bunch of curated travel itineraries here.
For Brisbane visitors, head to Harrisville and Charlwood for a jam-packed day trip starting at Summer Land Camels to feed and meet the camels. Then swing by Heritage Poultry for hands-on farm life before continuing on to Ellia’s Garden and Valley Pride Produce to pick your own vegetables straight from the paddock.
If you’re keen to balance paddock stops with cellar doors, Kalbar, Charlwood and Mount Alford delivers a little bit of everything. Browse local produce at Scenic Rim Farm Shop, book in for cow cuddles at Northview Highlands, stock up on greens at Valley Pride Produce and finish the afternoon with wine tasting at Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard and rosella picking at Vanbery Jam Co.
For those chasing cheese boards and local drops, Wyaralong, Allenview and Jimboomba pairs wine at The Overflow Estate 1895 with sheep’s cheese at Towri Sheep Cheeses, before finishing at Bee All Natural Honey for something sweet to round it out.
Tamborine Mountain locals (or those happy to make a weekend of it) can hop between Boxer Brewing Co, Witches Falls Winery, Cauldron Distillery and Tamborine Mountain Distillery – though a designated driver, or an overnight stay, is strongly encouraged.
At just over an hour from both Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the Scenic Rim makes for an easy day trip, although many visitors choose to stretch it into a weekend. There are also accomodation packages and transport providers available for those keen to leave the driving to someone else.
Free registrations are required, with maps and full itinerary details available via Destination Scenic Rim.
