The moody green cocktail bar upstairs from sAme sAme on James St is about to reveal its tasty new transformation. Anyday group – the team behind Brisbane favourites sAme sAme, Agnes, Golden Avenue and more – recently announced that LOS (Land of Smiles) will soon undergo an identity evolution drawing on both Mexican and Thai cultures. LOS will unveil its new look on Friday May 1, championed by an updated menu blending the depth, spice and complexity of Mexican food with bold and complimentary Thai flavours.

For Anyday, LOS’s upcoming evolution is the natural next step for the space. “We have always imagined LOS as a Mexican fiesta in the back of a tuk tuk, a space that feels energetic, a little unexpected and full of personality,” Anyday co-founder Tyron Simon explains. Being just a set of stairs away, LOS has always been closely linked to landmark restaurant sAme sAme, with southeast Asian-inspired cocktails and a side passion for tequila. “Now, the relationship between the two venues feel intentional.”

Currently in its seventh year of service, LOS is building on its legacy by highlighting the synergy between two equally bold and complimentary street-food cultures. Under the direction of Anyday culinary director Ben Williamson, head chef Arté Assavakavinvong draws on elements of Mexican and Thai food culture to deliver a bold and fun menu designed to sit alongside the extensive drinks offering. Taking inspiration from the Sonoran and Chihuahuan regions of Mexico, the new menu explores the natural similarities between the two cuisines: acidity, herbs, heat and freshness.

The result is a cohesive menu, with dishes like pork jowl tacos and corn ribs with nahm jim butter to complement the extensive LOS tequila collection, one of the most curated in Australia. With more than 360 bottles of agave lining the LOS shelves, the new cocktail program will take a unique and creative approach to the menu with bright acidity, spice and fresh aromatics. One example is the new Holy Mole cocktail which incorporates mole (a rich, traditional Mexican sauce made from a complex blend of chili peppers, nuts and spices) from the new LOS food menu, which is combined with agave, hibiscus and chocolate for an umami-rich flavour. Paired with its lively music program inspired by Mexico City, L.A. and Europe, this next chapter of LOS continues the venue’s legacy of vibrancy, quality and fun.
