From news of a new pizza and focaccia spot in Woolloongabba to a new resident at Queen’s Wharf, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Bruno’s Pizza And Focaccia
Here’s a slice of good news for all Woolloongabba-based pizza fans – a brand new pizzeria and focacceria is bringing a dash of old-school Italian charm to your neighbourhood. Bruno’s Pizza And Focaccia is taking shape at Trafalgar Lane and, while it’s new, the team behind the venture are looking to create a space that feels like it has been part of the neighbourhood for decades. Aesthetically, we’re told that Bruno’s is taking inspiration from classic Italian-American restaurants – a warm and timeless space that makes guests feel relaxed as soon as they enter. On the food front, the Bruno’s menu will have pizza at its heart, serving the good stuff for dine-in and takeaway alongside pasta, classic Italian starters and desserts. There will also be a strong focus on Italian focaccia sandwiches, which will anchor Bruno’s daytime trade. Once open, Bruno’s will look to endear itself to the community, offering something for a quick grab-and-go bite, long lunches, lively dinners and weeknight takeaway. Bruno’s will open in late October or early November – keep your eyes peeled for more.

Malt Traders
One of The City’s finest purveyors of top tipples is opening a new location, with Malt Traders cutting the ribbon on its third inner-city outpost tomorrow, Wednesday October 14. The site is opening at Queen’s Wharf, just next to the entrance to The Star Brisbane on William Street. Similar in scope to its sibling locations at Heritage Lanes and on Market Street, Malt Traders Queen’s Wharf doubles as a boutique bottle shop and bar, with approximately 80 seats spread across alfresco and interior tables. Like always, the Malt Traders retail component will showcase craft beer from across Australia (plus some high-end Belgian brews), artisanal wines and small-batch spirits. The bar will be equipped with two draught taps and a tight wine list, with guests free to BYO food from nearby venues. Once open, Malt Traders will operate from Monday to Saturday, with plans to expand its operating window to seven days a week.

Goldie
Skipped breakfast this morning? If you work in the city, here’s some news that’ll get your stomach grumbling in hungry protestation. Goldie, the bright-orange-hued brekkie roll specialist has opened a second location in The City, this time hewing out a cosy nook at the base of the UniLodge building on the corner of George Street and Market Street. Designed by architect Matthew James Reynolds, the site boasts the same striking aesthetic as its Queen Street sibling, using vivid neon as a beacon for hungry locals. The offering is also the same as its crosstown predecessor, offering brekkie roll riffs alongside smash-patty cheeseburgers, crispy hash browns, specialty coffee and matcha.

The Bower Hotel
A historic Toowoomba pub has been reborn, with the former Shamrock Hotel transforming into The Bower Hotel after an extensive redevelopment process. The iconic Ruthven Street watering hole – owned and operated by the multi-generational hospitality clan, the Gurr family – has been given a multi-million-dollar makeover, with a chic garden-inspired redesign bringing together all aspects of the building, from dining, bars and live sport to entertainment, gaming and accommodation. Looking to evolve the traditional pub experience while still retaining all the hallmarks of a great local, the Gurr family has drawn inspiration from Toowoomba’s reputation as Australia’s Garden City – incorporating green aspects throughout the redesign. Anchoring The Bower Hotel’s offering is Poppy’s Bistro, where Australian pub favourites, 20 beers on tap and true-blue hospitality can be enjoyed. The venue also features an outdoor terrace, a lounge, and a sports bar – the latter equipped with a 7-metre and 4.5-metre screens airing the biggest fixtures. Bower’s Nest – the hotel’s own accommodation spot – is equipped with 22 refurbished rooms, with a further six rooms planned.
