Flowers have always been – and will continue to be – a thoughtful, sentimental gesture. From birthdays and anniversaries to spur-of-the-moment surprises, receiving a bouquet is guaranteed to brighten your day. But in a time-poor world, finding the perfect bunch in a hurry isn’t always easy. Opening next month in Woolloongabba, MILKBUD is on a mission to make ordering flowers as effortless as ordering a burger and fries.
After assisting in the design of her husband Dilan’s Fortitude Valley restaurant Mr. Vain a few years ago, Courtney Ildes uncovered a new sense of creativity.
“What I really learned from that experience is that the most meaningful thing you can offer someone isn’t a product – it’s a feeling,” says Courtney.
After years spent working across the decorative and interior-design industries, Courtney (who boasts a self-taught background in the wonderland of flowers) decided to step out on her own earlier this year with plans to open her first floral studio, MILKBUD.
Opening in early June, MILKBUD won’t be your typical flower shop. Instead, the studio aims to provide a solution for busy everyday living.
So, how does the concept work?
Courtney wants ordering flowers to feel as easy as ordering dinner on a Tuesday night. Bouquets will be pre-bunched, wrapped and ready to go each morning, with customers able to pick up in-store or opt for speedy delivery through DoorDash. After considering how to contribute to the floral industry in a way that aligned with modern lifestyles, Courtney realised simplicity was the answer.
“Time is everyone’s biggest villain right now. We want things quick, easy and beautiful, and MILKBUD works on your schedule, not the other way around.”
The instant florist is designed not only for milestone occasions like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays and anniversaries, but also for random acts of kindness and those moments when you can’t be there in person.
“Honestly, I’m guilty of leaving things to the last minute and I think a lot of people are.”

Nestled inside a quaint brick building on Trafalgar Street in Woolloongabba – across from Pablo’s Pantry – the hole-in-the-wall studio has been designed with the flowers as the focal point, with clean layers of buttermilk tones, chrome finishes and chocolatey timber accents to warmly welcome customers inside.
As for the inventory, customers can expect pre-made bouquets, on-trend single stems (the kind you save from Pinterest) and seasonal bunches, with local suppliers helping ensure optimal freshness. Signature MILKBUD bouquets will carry playful names like BOYS’N’BUTTER, CHERRY CURL and PAINT ME PRETTY, making the experience feel more like choosing an ice-cream flavour than selecting flowers.
A core bouquet collection called MILKBUD Paws will also debut as a pet-safe range for households with cats and dogs – something especially close to Courtney’s heart, as Dilan was initially hesitant to buy flowers when they first got their kitten.
Sustainability and waste reduction are also central to the MILKBUD ethos, with the studio opting for plastic-free wrapping, eliminating floral foam and exploring alternative uses for unsold blooms. Bouquets nearing the end of their shelf life will be donated to local businesses, hospitals and patients who could use a little boost of happiness.
“Flowers don’t stop having the power to make someone’s day just because they didn’t sell.”
Looking ahead, Courtney is also developing MILKBUD Petal Paper – handmade botanical paper featuring personalised messages, designed to give every unused stem a second life.
MILKBUD is set to open in early June at 19 Trafalgar Street in Woolloongabba.
