A new inner-city sanctum boasting thousands of trees and iconic red Brisbane bricks will soon take shape in South Brisbane. Aptly named Sanctuary, the latest large-scale project from Aria Property Group – the developer behind much of Fish Lane – is set to deliver five new laneways filled with hospitality and retail ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games. Here’s what we know…

Just a short walk from Fish Lane, West Village, South Bank and West End, Sanctuary by Aria Property Group will soon reimagine one of the last major undeveloped sites in South Brisbane. Located at 164-190 Melbourne Street, the integrated precinct design forecasts five new laneways, twelve restaurant and retail spaces, two restored heritage buildings and a new public park.

At the centre of the development will be Sanctuary’s flagship restaurant, set over the two storeys that was formerly Bond’s Sweet Factory in a 1951 Art Deco building with a 75-year history. Similarly, the heritage-listed former Malouf’s Fruit Shop will undergo a transformation into an all-day dining venue suited to morning and evening sipping.

Melbourne Lane will form the precinct’s principal thoroughfare,  running the full width of the site and lined with restaurants and boutiques set beneath terraced seating. In homage to the South Brisbane brickworks, Sanctuary will be shaped by 240,000 red bricks, with design shaped by Richards + Spence, the architects behind Fish Lane and The Calile Hotel.

Landscape architects Subtropic Design will plant the laneways with tree ferns, bird’s nest ferns and native vines to create a cool, shaded passages through Brisbane summers. Designed to feel like a natural wonder in the middle of the city, the Sanctuary precinct will feature a total of 13,738 trees and plants throughout.

With ambitions for the precinct to blend seamlessly within its surrounds, Sanctuary will be bordered by Sanctuary Park – a public urban meadow boasting native flora, shaded seating and broad tiered steps. Aria will host a year-round calendar of events within the park, drawing on its experience establishing Fish Lane Arts Precinct and managing Fish Lane, Ulster Lane and Eden Lane.

The first of three residential towers, Sanctuary Residences by Bates Smart, is scheduled for completion in mid to late 2029, with retailers and restaurants to be announced as they are confirmed.
