The Jukebox: the best new local tunes to add to your playlist this month
If we had to sum up August in just one word, it would be busy. Whether inspired by the coming of BIGSOUND this week or the result of winter hibernation jam sessions, Queensland’s artists and bands gave us plenty of material to work with last month. We listened to more albums than we can count, and were deliberating over the final five tracks until the very last minute. Take a look at our favourite songs to come out of Queensland last month …
‘Ever’ by Eliza & The Delusionals
We’ve waited patiently and at long last, the time has finally come – Eliza & The Delusionals have dropped new music for the first time in over two years with ‘Ever’, a track that is well worth the wait.
Traces of inspiration from Evanescence’s aesthetic and sound circa 2003 can be found in the track, with a softer and more ethereal interpretation in line with Eliza & The Delusional’s signature 90’s inspired melodies.
If you’re looking for a chance to bring Eliza & The Delusionals gigs back into your life, the pop-rock trio will set off on tour with James Marriott in October, hitting the Fortitude Music Hall on Saturday October 10.

‘If I Were To Fall’ stands out from the five-track EP as a testament to the richness of Brisbane’s music scene, showcasing the kind of sonic synergy that bands with years more experience wish they had.
Though relatively new on the scene, the Brisbane-grown pop-punk hardcore four-piece just completed the SEQ leg of its tour and are now jetting off to Indonesia for a few special shows, ready to share their explosive debut EP across international waters.

The first single ‘Francesca’ debuted the album announcement, bringing Shag Rock’s signature mellow melodies back to our headphones. Upbeat yet easy-going guitar riffs plus a catchy and energetic rhythm replicate the band’s trademark breezy, sun-drenched sound just in time to welcome spring’s longer days and warmer weather.
‘Bravado’ by Ella Fence
Gold Coast’s Ella Fence has a way of commanding the attention of her audience – and her latest EP Time & Space manages to do just that across its seven songs.
If you’re not familiar with the alt-pop artist’s cinematic intensity already, ‘Bravado’ is a great place to start. Standing out from a collection of equally gripping tracks, the song’s rich, smooth melodies snap into a magnetic, high-energy chorus that succinctly capture the artist’s genre-defying sound.
This weekend, Ella Fence be taking to the stage at Tweed Regional Museum’s free-entry Street Party show alongside Buttered, Birren, Benny O’Dwyer and Stiz Fusion if you’re looking for a chance to get a sample of Ella’s electric in-person presence.
Honourable Mentions: In August, we were also treated to Bug’s fourth studio album Head Noise which the pop-rock trio will celebrate with a two-night showcase at Crowbar, joined by the likes of Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack, Dirty Harry, VOIID and more. Brisbane-based rapper Nerve also released 14-track album Growing Pains with features from Kobie Dee, Barkaa, Mai Elanor and others, while Sycco announced upcoming album Look Up with a single of the same name. Tamborine Mountain’s post-punk pioneers Blind Corners also dropped its new album Sink or Swim, alongside Loose Goose, who just dropped its first full length album Going Nowhere Fast.
