Top up your TBR at the cosiest independent bookstores on the Gold Coast
With winter still holding strong, you may be looking for something to keep your mind busy until spring shows its face – and we have just the thing. Sometimes the simple things are best and there really is nothing like curling up with a good book. Where better to find that book than at one of the Gold Coast’s many independently owned bookstores? Here are our favourites.
BOOK FACE, Pacific Fair
Paul and Leo Berkelouw opened their first BOOK FACE store in November 2014. Now the collection has grown to six stores across three states, all infused with the same ethos – that books should be a permanent fixture in our lives (and our backpacks). Since opening its doors back in 2015, BOOK FACE Pacific Fair has remained one of the Gold Coast’s leading bibliophile havens, offering a curated selection of rare books and a unique collection of home wares and bookish gifts for sale. The in-house cafe offers a respite for reading and recharging, while also hosting a a free book exchange program and a small book club on the first Thursday of every month to discuss contemporary novels.
Big B Books, Burleigh Heads
Not many bookstores can boast an almost fifty-year history, but Burleigh’s ‘little bookshop with big heart’ has been supplying the area with new and used books since the late 1970s. Since then, Big B Books has remained in the Big B Arcade just off James Street, offering a carefully curated range of books, from fiction to non-fiction and pre-loved to brand new. Big B also offers book exchanges – when you finish one literary adventure, bring the book in-store where the staff will value it and give you credit to fund your next adventure.

Bookness, Mudgeeraba
Tucked into the heart of the quaint and leafy streets of Mudgeeraba is Bookness, an independent book shop where readers, writers, thinkers and coffee drinkers gather. Started by owners and longtime friends Anita and Nadine, Bookness is Mudgeeraba’s favourite literary getaway. Under The Greenwood Tree, Tamborine Mountain
Bridging worlds of art and literature, Tamborine Mountain’s Under The Greenwood Tree is a haven of contemporary art and a large selection of books. Each month, the store hosts a new exhibition within its small dedicated gallery, while the book offering encompasses everything from new releases and classics to its extensive non-fiction collection. The store is also conveniently located within walking distance of Tamborine National Park and local wineries, in case you like a little nature with your reading.

Boardwalk Books, Kingscliff
A charming seaside village isn’t complete without its independent book store. At Boardwalk Books, the well-read staff love giving recommendations and living by their motto ‘we read the books we sell’. The store holds two regular fiction bookclubs at the Kingscliff Surf Club on the first Wednesday of every month, plus a new romance book club, with members receiving 10 percent off designated book club purchases.
Canungra Books and Art, Canungra
Set in a delightful old Queenslander, this Kidston Street store is more than just a bookshop. A curated collection of all the fun things the owners love, Canungra Books and Art offers yes, books and art, but also crafted goods, vintage clothing and vinyl – basically the same things you would find in any well-loved home – creating a cosy retreat for all who walk through the door. But books still remain at the core, with Australian authors and tomes on spirituality taking centre stage.
Bundle O Books, Coolangatta
The Book Shop Coolangatta may look small and unassuming from the outside, but inside it’s quite easy to get lost in the stacks of books on hand. Lovingly filled with quality new books and a curated collection of older pre-loved novels, this Griffith Street haunt prides itself on its friendly service and relaxed atmosphere. Only a short walk away from Kirra Beach, you can settle down on the sand with a new or secondhand novel in tow.
