The festive season is fast approaching, bringing with it a familiar mix of questionable Secret Santa gifts, overcommitted social calendars and the occasional carpark meltdown. Thankfully, HOTA is offering a welcome dose of comic relief. This December, six of Australia’s funniest comedians will take to the stage for a one-night-only Christmas Comedy Gala, promising two hours of sharp wit, outrageous observations and plenty of laughs.

By mid-December, the festive spirit can need a boost. You’ve endured the shopping centre madness and heard Mariah Carey enough times to last several lifetimes. Before you resign yourself to another evening of obligatory merriment, HOTA has something considerably more entertaining up its sleeve. On Friday December 18, the arts precinct will host its inaugural Christmas Comedy Gala, bringing together a stellar line-up of Australian comedians for two hours of sharp observations, questionable confessions and the kind of laughter that makes your face hurt.

Taking to the Theatre 1 stage are Becky Lucas, Rhys Nicholson, Dave Thornton, Geraldine Hickey, Peter James and Dusty Rich. It’s a wonderfully eclectic collection of comedic personalities, each bringing their own particular brand of humour to the occasion. From razor-sharp wit to the delightfully absurd, there’s plenty of potential for things to get hilariously out of hand.

Presiding over the festivities is Brisbane comedian Emma Holland, whose offbeat humour and quick wit make her a fitting host for an evening that promises to be anything but your standard Christmas celebration. With six comedians sharing the stage across two hours, audiences can expect a rapid-fire succession of stand-up rather than a single extended set.

The event marks the first Christmas Comedy Gala for HOTA, adding a decidedly less traditional offering to its end-of-year calendar.

HOTA’s Christmas Comedy Gala takes place on Friday December 18, head here for tickets.
