Something truly special has sprung to life in the heart of Mudgeeraba. New cafe and providore, The Hearth, which softly opened its doors last week, isn’t just a coffee spot – it’s a love letter to food, connection and community, and it’s already made an immediate impression on locals. Owner Mikka Richter envisioned a space where people could gather and feel utterly at home, and that vision is already becoming a reality.
As a Mudgeeraba local, every day Mikka drove past the building that would one day become The Hearth, her mind brimming with possibilities. She dreamed of a white-washed, rustic farmhouse aesthetic, an alfresco play area for kids and garden beds bursting with fragrant herbs that would be foraged for the kitchen. Inside, she pictured shelves laden with her favourite gourmet delights – artisanal cheeses, fresh strands from Pasta Bah, warm baguettes and Pepe Saya cultured butter.
When the chance to acquire the space presented, Mikka knew she couldn’t let it pass. Following many, many arduous days and nights dedicated to realising her dream, Mikka now stands at the door. “Welcome to The Hearth,” she beams. “I aimed to capture the spirit of Mudgeeraba and its community, creating a place that feels like home.”
And that’s precisely the feeling you get as you step foot inside. Mikka’s background has always been in and around hospitality, weaving through weddings, private event catering and artisanal tableware, all the way back to her home kitchen. “I come from a long lineage of excellent cooks in my family,” Mikka tells us, recounting moments spent around the dinner table. Over the last year, Mikka has reconnected with the joy of feeding and nourishing people. You could say, it’s her love language.
The Hearth is the culmination of Mikka’s journey so far – a soulful space inspired by community, created with intention and purposefully designed to feel like stepping into someone’s warm, welcoming home.
A long cabinet greets you on arrival. At one end, you’ll spy a mouth-watering array of baked goods from Well Bread & Pastry, and at the other, a La Marzocco coffee machine that hasn’t stopped since Mikka opened the doors last week. Dotted around the space is a scattering of Parisian-style table settings, while outside adopts a more casual wooden box for seats approach.
Although Mikka has big plans for the venue and menu, to start, the focus is firmly on nailing the fundamentals – expertly crafted coffee and one hero menu item – the breakfast bun, generously loaded with free-range bacon, house-made rosti, cheddar, egg, herb mayo, tomato relish and rocket – it’s a truly satisfying start to any day. Alongside coffee using Allpress Espresso’s organic beans, you can enjoy refreshing Ohayo matcha, organic teas, HRVST St cold-pressed juices and natural sodas.
Despite having only opened for one week, The Hearth has already become a cherished meeting place for locals to enjoy a coffee and a yarn, perfectly embodying Mikka’s heartfelt vision for the space. In Mikka’s words: “If what we’re offering is beautiful and intentional, people will come.”
And come they have. Down the track, Mikka has plans to evolve The Hearth into a Friday and Saturday evening wine bar – the perfect way to end the week in good company, glass in hand.
