For Tweed Heads locals and those in the know, Bay Street is a vibrant hub where conversation flows as easily as the coffee. It was this welcoming, community-driven atmosphere that ultimately convinced Mitchell Evans and Jemima Stanwix that this was the perfect place to launch their first hospitality venture, nice nice.
Jemima and Mitch are no strangers to the Coolangatta–Tweed hospitality scene. The duo first crossed paths slinging pizzas at the beloved Francie’s (now Franc Jrs), and later shaking margs alongside Kristal Smith at Clay Cantina. When Kristal headed north, it felt like the right time for Jemima and Mitch to back themselves and bring something of their own to life.
“We were pretty agnostic about what we were going to do,” Mitch admits. “We looked at a few bars, but then this place came up – it was just too beautiful and too good to pass up.”
The space they landed on, a former cafe known as Mayk, offered more than just good bones – it offered community. Surrounded by like-minded operators and old mates from places like Rob Roy, Badlands and the “Bready” crew (The Bread Social) next door, it didn’t take much convincing.
“It’s just got a nice little neighbourhood feel,” says Mitch. “Everyone’s been awesome.”
With the venue sorted, the next step was deciding what to actually do with it. The couple noticed a gap in the area’s breakfast scene – a proper, cooked breakfast was hard to come by. They leaned into that niche, drawing inspiration from the food they love to eat at home. The result is a menu of comforting, flavour-packed dishes with a gentle Asian twist.
“It’s kind of just what I like cooking at home,” Mitch says. “I think you’ve got to back your own taste and trust that other people will get around it too.”
Judging by the steady stream of locals queuing up during our visit, he might be onto something.
nice nice. serves up a tight, punchy menu of morning morsels. The chilli scrambled eggs, boosted by Mitch’s house-made chilli crisp, are a standout – zingy, savoury and just the right amount of heat. The miso mushrooms are pure umami comfort, swimming in garlicky miso butter, and the kimchi, cheese and egg roll is already earning a loyal fan base of its own.
With just 32 seats – split between cosy indoor nooks and sun-soaked outdoor spots – nice nice. has an intimate, easygoing vibe. On pour is Byron Bay’s Marvell Street Coffee Roasters, along with organic matcha, sticky chai, smoothies and a rich, decadent adaptogenic hot chocolate for those craving something different.
nice nice. is the kind of place you want in your ‘hood – unpretentious, thoughtful and genuinely welcoming. And with Jemima and Mitch at the helm – two of the nicest, most sunshiney humans you’ll meet – it feels like nice nice. is already living up to its name.
