At long last, Broadbeach favourite Mamasan is preparing to swing open its doors once again this September, celebrating ten incredible years with a dramatic transformation of both its space and its menu. Long celebrated for its punchy East-Asian flavours and buzzy atmosphere, the culinary institution is evolving into something even more refined, and it’s set to be one of the Gold Coast’s most exciting re-openings of the year.
When Mamasan first opened its doors a decade ago, it helped shape a new era of dining on the Gold Coast, introducing a sophisticated fit-out and bold East-Asian flavours as the city’s culinary scene began to evolve. Fast forward ten years, and owners Lauren and Brad Duitsch have decided it was time for Mamasan to evolve too, closing the doors temporarily to embark on a full-scale renovation of the Broadbeach institution.
In the meantime, the pair kept locals well-fed with the launch of Babymama – a sassy offshoot with a more intimate setting that quickly charmed its Nobby Beach neighbourhood. But Mamasan’s return promises the full experience fans have been craving, this time with dramatically reimagined interiors, a broader offering and an all-star culinary team.
While the design details are still under wraps, we’re told the new fit-out will lean further into Mamasan’s signature moody aesthetic. Think rich textures, layering in details designed for indulgence. For the first time, Mamasan will also debut a ten-seat private dining room alongside a larger private space that can host up to 40 guests.
The menu has undergone just as much of a transformation. Inspired by the dining tables of Seoul, the bustling alleys of Chengdu and the kitchens of Tokyo, the new dishes blend authentic traditions with contemporary flair. Teasers so far include dry-aged roast duck, yellowfin tuna tacos and a Hong Kong-style ‘Typhoon Shelter’ lobster. These sit comfortably alongside the classics that have defined Mamasan for the past decade, from spanner-crab dumplings to scallop-and-prawn brioche toast and that unmissable Korean fried chicken.
“We want this new chapter to feel both familiar and elevated,” says co-founder Lauren Duitsch. “From the interiors to the menu, every detail has been carefully reimagined with our guests in mind. Not only have we invested within the new space, we have also appointed world class talent, including new executive chef, Sebastian Tan.”
Sebastian brings more than 18 years experience across globally recognised kitchens, including Hakkasan at The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat, Silks at Crown Sydney and Sydney’s acclaimed JINJA. In 2023, he earned a Gold Medal at the World Master Chefs Competition for Cantonese Cuisine. Known for his technical precision and creative flair, Sebastian is well placed to guide Mamasan into its next decade, honouring its legacy while introducing fresh stories and flavours.
Bookings for the new-look Mamasan open September 2, exactly ten years to the day since the restaurant first welcomed diners. Consider this your cue to get in early. For now, Babymama remains open in Nobby Beach, so if you can’t wait for your Mama fix, book a table here.
