There’s a new cafe in Broadbeach that’s already building a following, and it starts, as it should, with the coffee. At Leaf Cafe & Co Broadbeach, the approach is anything but set-and-forget. Each day, manager Alejo recalibrates the machine to account for humidity and temperature – a level of care that rarely filters into casual cafe settings, but here it’s simply part of the routine.
Nestled at the base of Meriton Suites Gold Coast, the cafe is part of the wider Leaf Cafe brand, which has locations across Australia. While the menu follows the brand’s all-day format, the Broadbeach outpost places a clear focus on getting the details right.
“Coffee is literally our life,” Alejo says. “If you want to serve a good coffee, you have to adjust it every day.”
The house blend is roasted in Sydney and designed to be an easy, everyday drinker, with chocolate-led notes, subtle fruit and a smooth, syrupy body that finishes with hints of honey and toffee.
Beyond the cup, the menu covers plenty of ground, but it’s the more distinctive dishes that are drawing attention early on. The pistachio French toast is hard to miss – stacked with pistachio cream, fresh fruit and ice-cream, landing somewhere between breakfast and dessert without going overboard. Turkish eggs bring a savoury hit, pairing poached eggs with yoghurt and chilli oil, while the coastal crumpet layers smoked salmon, avocado and soft eggs into something a little more substantial than it sounds.
Alongside these are the expected staples – eggs your way, big breakfasts, omelettes and toasties – plus a few curveballs like breakfast gnocchi for those leaning savoury. Much of what’s served is produced within the Leaf brand itself, from juices and syrups to jams, giving the offering a consistent thread across both food and drink.
Drinks extend well beyond coffee. The hot chocolate is a standout, made by melting down Belgian chocolate and working it through milk for a rich, glossy finish (no powders or syrups in sight), available in dark, milk or white. Then there’s the ruby red – a vibrant, fruit-forward option that adds a fresh, slightly tangy counterpoint to the heavier hitters on the menu, alongside a lineup of house-made juices and specialty drinks.
Set slightly off the main Broadbeach strip, the space has a relaxed, neighbourhood feel that suits it. It’s the kind of place where regulars are quickly recognised and where it’s easy to settle in for longer than planned.
