For many Gold Coast diners, Max and Amanda Alfieri need no introduction. The couple behind Pacific Fair favourite Modo Mio – and former owners of much-loved Sanctuary Cove restaurant Ioesco – are returning to the waterfront precinct this July with something new, Zio Italian Enoteca.

Five years on from Ioesco, the Alfieris are back – this time with something a little more relaxed. Zio is built around Italian wine, antipasti and the pleasure of having nowhere to be.

Opening on Masthead Way, the enoteca will seat around 70 guests across indoor and outdoor spaces along the Village’s main thoroughfare. The format, we’re told, will be more relaxed than their previous ventures, but the philosophy will be the same – warm hospitality, quality produce and a genuine love of Italian food and wine.

Anchoring the menu will be a carefully curated selection of local and international wines alongside traditional antipasto – freshly sliced cured meats, artisan cheeses, crusty bread and seasonal accompaniments. The kind of spread designed for grazing, sharing and staying for one more glass. As the venue moves into spring, a broader selection of authentic Italian dishes will follow, inspired by the couple’s extensive travels throughout Italy.

“Sanctuary Cove has always been home to us,” says Max. “Zio gives us the opportunity to share the flavours, traditions and discoveries we’ve experienced across Italy – from regional wines to time-honoured food traditions.”

Zio Italian Enoteca opens at Sanctuary Cove in late July.
