Small plates, sake and a fresh take on neighbourhood Japanese dining – welcome to Jin Izakaya

The former Easy Street Diner has entered a new chapter. Reimagined as Jin Izakaya, the Gold Coast Highway site now trades burgers for a style of dining that is slower, more communal and deeply rooted in Japanese tradition. Expect thoughtful share plates, seasonal produce, quality sake and genuine hospitality, all served in a warm, understated space designed to encourage lingering.

Jin Izakaya is the long-held vision of owner Aya Amemiya, who spent two decades working in dentistry before making the leap into hospitality. To bring that vision to life, Aya partnered with head chef Dai, creating a menu that respects traditional Japanese cooking while making the most of Australian ingredients.

That philosophy extends beyond the plate. Rich timber wraps the bar, walls and ceiling, softly glowing lanterns add warmth throughout the dining room, and the open kitchen creates a quiet connection between diners and the chefs at work.

Built around the Japanese tradition of izakaya dining, the menu favours smaller plates designed to be shared. Familiar favourites including sashimi, chicken karaage, grilled fish and pork miso soup sit alongside more contemporary dishes such as shiso prawn toast, tempura nori salmon poke bites and simmered wagyu wrapped with crisp vegetables. One of the standouts is the Egg Tokyo Dome, a Dai specialty that reimagines traditional chawanmushi as a silky tofu and egg custard infused with kelp stock and finished with a molten cheese centre.

The kitchen also takes a considered approach to wellbeing. Australian-grown produce is prioritised where possible, vegetables feature prominently throughout the menu and almost every dish is gluten free. Even the tofu has been carefully sourced from a local Japanese artisan producer that uses traditional methods and equipment imported from Japan.

Lunch introduces a different style of dining through a selection of teishoku meals inspired by ichiju-sansai – the Japanese philosophy of one soup and three dishes. Each set pairs rice, miso soup, organic tofu and seasonal sides with a choice of grilled salmon, karaage chicken, slow-braised pork belly or assorted sashimi.

The drinks list is short and sharp, spanning sake, Japanese whisky highballs, tap beer and a rotating seasonal cocktail – currently a matcha martini.

Rather than reinventing Japanese dining, Jin Izakaya focuses on doing the fundamentals well. Thoughtful cooking, quality ingredients and a genuine respect for tradition make this a welcome addition to the local dining scene, and one that feels likely to find a loyal neighbourhood following.
