Burrata Boy opens in Coolangatta with loaded focaccia sandwiches and globes of gooey goodness

There’s something deeply satisfying about cutting into a ball of burrata. One gentle nudge and the creamy centre spills across the plate, instantly making whatever it’s touching infinitely more delicious. At Burrata Boy, that moment isn’t reserved for a special occasion – it’s the entire premise.

After building a loyal following at markets in Currumbin, Emerald Lakes and Miami Marketta, Burrata Boy has found a permanent home in Coolangatta, where founders Emma Fletcher and Victor Fernandini are proving that you really can build an entire menu around one very good cheese.

The idea was born during a trip to New Zealand. Emma, originally from New Zealand, and Victor, who hails from Peru, were both ready for a change after working jobs they didn’t love. Somewhere between conversations and copious amounts of burrata, Victor joked they should sell the beloved Italian cheese. Emma laughed and replied, “You can be the Burrata Boy.” The name stuck, and so did the idea.

What began as three signature burrata bowls quickly evolved. Fat focaccia sandwiches joined the menu, queues started forming at the markets and, before long, the pair were hunting for a permanent home. They weren’t looking for a sprawling restaurant – just a compact space with plenty of personality. They found exactly that tucked away on Chalk Street in Coolangatta, next door to ACTV Strength Co, where the tiny takeaway kitchen has already become a local favourite.

The menu keeps things refreshingly simple. Fresh focaccia, baked daily by The Bread Social, forms the base of loaded sandwiches like the BBF Signature, packed with burrata, prosciutto, basil and your choice of balsamic glaze, hot honey or basil pesto. There’s also the Hot Boy Spicy with salami, fior di latte, tomato, rocket and hot honey, alongside bowls where a glistening blob of burrata sits proudly atop rocket, cured meats, vegetables and pesto, ready to be scooped up with slices of focaccia.

The burrata itself is sourced from Byron Bay Mozzarella, while those planning a beach picnic can opt for the generously loaded Burrata Platter, stacked with burrata, cured meats, olives, tomatoes and focaccia. Add coffee from Kasa Coffee, a soundtrack of feel-good tunes and a handful of spots to perch out front, and you’ve got another excellent excuse to linger in Coolangatta.

One tip before you go – Burrata Boy makes everything fresh each day, so when it’s sold out, it’s sold out. And judging by the crowds so far, that happens more often than not so best to get in early.
