One day, three ways to feast. Acclaimed chef George Calombaris is heading to HOTA this October for a celebration of Greek food and hospitality, from rooftop taverna dining to an intimate cooking masterclass and an exclusive six-course dinner.
There’s something about Greek food that lends itself to a good time. On Saturday October 31, acclaimed chef and former MasterChef Australia judge George Calombaris is bringing his own take on that philosophy to HOTA, Home of the Arts, for a one-day culinary takeover. With three distinct experiences on offer, there’s something for those who prefer to leave the cooking to the professionals and those keen to pick up a few tricks themselves.
At the heart of the takeover is George’s signature approach to Greek cuisine, which he calls Greekology. It’s a philosophy that draws on the flavours and traditions of his heritage while leaving plenty of room for creativity, storytelling and a little culinary theatre. Across the day, guests will have the opportunity to experience it in three very different settings.
For those who like their Greek feasts with a side of skyline views, The Exhibitionist Bar will embrace the spirit of a traditional taverna with a special Greek-inspired menu. Perched atop HOTA Gallery, the rooftop venue is already a pretty spectacular spot to settle in for a drink, but for one day, Greek flavours will take centre stage. It’s the more casual option of the three, perfect for gathering a few friends and making an afternoon of it.
If you’ve ever wanted to learn how a chef approaches the flavours of Greece, George will also be hosting The Art of Cooking Greek, an intimate 90-minute masterclass in HOTA’s Theatre 2. Kicking off at 2:30 pm, the session will see George share his knowledge, techniques and passion for traditional Greek dishes, with a feta-washed martini on arrival and snacks served throughout. Tickets are $100 per person, with limited places available.
For the main event, George will join forces with Palette’s executive chef Dayan Hartill-Law for an exclusive six-course dining experience that brings Greek influences together with the exceptional produce of Southeast Queensland.
Beginning at 6:30 pm, the evening will open with a Q&A exploring George’s career and the philosophy behind his cooking before guests settle in for a collaborative menu showcasing the chefs’ respective styles. Expect fire to play a starring role, with dishes drawing on George’s favourite flavours and techniques, and ingredients given the kind of attention they deserve. Tickets range from $350 to $500 per person, with the experience running for approximately two and a half hours.
The takeover also coincides with the Gold Coast Greek Festival, which will bring two days of Greek food, music, dancing and cultural celebrations to HOTA’s parklands on October 31 and November 1. So, if ever there were a weekend to embrace your appetite for all things Greek, this would be it.
