Can’t decide what to order? Leave it to the cards. Yamagen at QT Gold Coast is putting a playful spin on the traditional degustation with Fate of Flavour, a five-course Japanese dining experience where tarot cards determine what’s on your plate and in your glass. And the best part? You won’t know exactly what’s coming until the cards are dealt.

There’s a certain thrill in surrendering control, particularly when the stakes involve something delicious. At Yamagen, QT Gold Coast’s acclaimed modern Japanese restaurant and izakaya, the age-old question of what to order is being taken out of your hands and placed squarely in those of fate. Well, fate and a rather intriguing deck of tarot cards.

Introducing Fate of Flavour, an immersive five-course dining experience that trades the predictable progression of a set menu for a little mystery, a dash of theatre and the possibility of discovering something you might never have ordered yourself.

Here’s how it works – rather than poring over the menu and debating the merits of sashimi versus something hot off the grill, diners draw from a specially curated deck of cards to reveal their culinary destiny. There are 16 exclusive dishes in the mix, with the cards guiding each guest through a five-course feast. It’s part dinner, part game of chance, with the kitchen taking care of the delicious details.

And while you might be leaving the selection to fate, you’re certainly not leaving flavour to chance. The possibilities include delicate Hokkaido scallop sashimi, rich wagyu tartare and miso-glazed toothfish from Glacier 51, alongside a selection of Yamagen favourites. Whether the cards deal you something familiar or lead you towards uncharted culinary territory, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Of course, a little liquid fortune never goes astray. Once your dining destiny has been revealed, a second deck enters the picture. This time, it’s the Suntory Cocktail Cards, which determine bespoke cocktail pairings designed to complement your particular menu. It’s a clever way to add another layer of discovery to the experience, with each draw shaping what’s to come.

The result is a dinner that unfolds differently for everyone at the table. You might find yourself comparing cards, swapping predictions or quietly hoping the next reveal brings that dish you’ve had your eye on. Either way, there’s something undeniably fun about handing over the decision-making and seeing where the evening takes you.

Fate of Flavour is available at Yamagen through December, with the five-course experience starting at $125 per person.
