Detectives from the Counter-Terrorism Investigation Group have charged a 24-year-old man following investigations into suspicious online activity.

A young man from Bellbowire in the western suburbs of Brisbane has been arrested and charged over “suspicious online activity”, Queensland police say.

Detectives from the Counter-Terrorism Investigation Group swooped on Wednesday, claiming a report had been made by a concerned member of the public into the 24-year-old man’s “suspicious online activity”.

They alleged the man was “making plans for acts of violence” and he was arrested and charged with one count of other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts.

“The Queensland Police Service (QPS) reassures the community that there are no known ongoing direct threats to the community or any upcoming events at this time,” police said in a statement.

“It is not alleged that a specific group was the target of the alleged planned acts of violence.”

The man is expected to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Police said they were working “in close collaboration with … federal and state counterparts to ensure the safety of all Queenslanders”.

“The safety and security of our communities remain the service’s highest priority.”

Anyone with information about possible threats to the community should come forward, police said.

The National Security Hotline is 1800 123 400.
