An advocacy group claims numerous greyhounds are dying at an Ipswich race track claiming 66 per cent of Queenslanders support an end to greyhound racing.

Cumbria Benny and Daintree Blinder, greyhounds that were euthanised at The Q racking complex at Ipswich after suffering leg injuries in the past two weeks, brings the total of dogs killed this year alone to 12, according to the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds.
The group claimed that since March 2025, 12 dogs were euthanised on-track at The Q, with another 25 dying post-race from serious injuries.
It listed Rockhampton and The Q as leading the country in off-track greyhound deaths, followed by Sale and Ballarat in Victoria.
President of the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds Amy McMahon said that while the rest of the world moves on from greyhound racing, the Queensland Government was failing to address the issue.
“The majority of Queenslanders want to end greyhound racing,” McMahon said.
A spokesperson for Acting Racing Minister Andrew Powell said Racing Queensland continues to prioritise animal welfare through the delivery of a cross-section of canine and equine activities.
“The Q was commissioned and constructed under the former Labor Government, and the Crisafulli Government is taking every step to ensure it meets animal welfare standards,” the spokesperson said.
“The former Labor government had no plan for Queensland racing, but we are getting on with the job of delivering for this $2.5 billion industry prioritising animal welfare.”
A DemosAU poll from March 2026 showed that 66 percent of Queenslanders were in support of phasing out greyhound racing, McMahon said.
The poll also showed 70 percent of Queenslanders opposed the state government’s $50 million annual funding of greyhound racing.
“New Zealand will end greyhound racing on 31 July, so on 1 August, we’ll be heading to Parliament House to let the government know that it’s time to ban greyhound racing in Queensland,” Amy McMahon added.
GCP, AnimalKind, Friends of the Hound and Greys Second Chance have teamed up to host the Queensland Against Greyhound Racing rally at Parliament House on Saturday, August 1.
Advocates would push for an end to greyhound racing in Queensland and countrywide, call for the re-homing all racing greyhounds, the transformation of tracks into public green space and to provide support for workers to transition to new jobs.
