Julia Gillard’s 2012 speech in Parliament captured international attention and became a defining moment in the national conversation around gender, power and leadership. In Julia, that speech – and the story behind it – is brought to the stage in Sydney Theatre Company and Canberra Theatre Centre’s gripping and critically acclaimed production, presented by Queensland Theatre.

Written by celebrated playwright Joanna Murray-Smith and directed by Helpmann Award-winner Sarah Goodes, Julia traces the personal and political journey of Australia’s first female Prime Minister. From her early years and rise through the political ranks to the intense scrutiny of national leadership, the play offers a rare and revealing portrait of a woman who helped reshape the country’s political landscape.

In a compelling fusion of history and theatre, acclaimed actor Justine Clarke takes on the role of Julia Gillard in a commanding solo performance that explores gender, privilege and power. The stirring re-examination moves through key moments in Julia’s life and career, drawing the audience into the challenges, decisions and turning points that led to one of the most memorable speeches in modern Australian politics.

The production builds to a verbatim performance of the now-iconic ‘misogyny speech’, delivered with clarity and force. Julia is a powerful reflection on leadership, legacy and the impact of a single voice speaking out – and being heard.

Julia takes to the QPAC stage for a limited season from August 15–30. Visit the Queensland Theatre website for more information and to book tickets.
