From a new bagel and coffee joint in Milton to a springtime pop-up in a heritage homestead, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Freya
Get hungry, Milton locals – there are some exciting things heading your way this spring! A team of mates will soon cut the ribbon on Freya, a grab-and-go modern Australian-inspired cafe that will be slinging casual coffee and nosh from early October. The brainchild of buds Tom, Will, Georgina and Phil, Freya’s menu will be concise but big on flavour – expect a selection of bagels coated in various flavoured schmears, including caramelised onion cream cheese. Freya will also be pouring coffee from Toby’s Estate, tea from The Tea Collective and an assortment of fresh juices and smoothies. While aligned more towards the takeaway crowd, Freya will also have some relaxed seating for those eager to sit while they sip. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Freya in the coming weeks.
Milton House Spring Social
In October, Milton House will play host to a four-weekend pop-up celebrating the onset of spring. Milton House Spring Social will transform the historic homestead on McDougall Street (located in the Kings Row Office Park) into an oasis of food, drink and music. Running every Friday through Sunday from Friday October 10 until Sunday November 2, guests can snag a table under the blooming jacarandas and enjoy beer and cider from Archer Brewing, vino from Ballandean Estate wines, refreshing Australian-inspired spritzes, street eats from a rotating roster of food trucks, and live music from a number of Brisbane musicians. “We created Milton House Spring Social to introduce Brisbane to some local producers and bring people into a part of the city they’ve probably never seen, the beautiful lawn of Milton House, which overlooks the city and the Brisbane River,” says Lucy Martin of Archer Brewing, organiser of the event. “It’s all about celebrating the best of spring – sunshine, flowers, good food, good drinks and great company.” Head to the Milton House Spring Social Instagram page for more info.
Maltese Independence Day at Layla
This Saturday September 27, Middle Eastern-inspired West End restaurant Layla will be hosting a four-course lunch event to honour Maltese Independence Day. Celebrating the cultural heritage of Layla’s owner Shane Delia, the lunch’s bold, share-style menu will offer guests a modern interpretation of Maltese flavours, with fresh and vibrant Queensland produce at its heart. The Layla crew will be pumping out dishes like seared half-shell scallops with Maltese pork sausage and almonds, fig and pistachio qassatat, char-grilled baby octopus dressed in tomato and capers, conchiglie pasta with sea urchin, peas and fel fel, sea salt-brined and roasted pork chop with broad bean and artichoke salad, and frozen carob nougat with lemon sorbet and caramelised honey meringue. Tickets for this must-attend lunch are still available for $120 per person, with one sitting taking place at 12:00 pm. Head to the Layla website to secure your spot.
Brewtide’s closure
In sad news for Brisbane’s suds scene, last week Albion-based craft-beer brewery Brewtide announced that it had closed its doors. The team behind the 500-sqm boutique beer maker – which was housed inside Craft’d Grounds on Collingwood Street, where it has operated since 2021 – took to social media to break the news, thanking supporters and staff that made Brewtide what it was. No information has been revealed about the future of Brewtide’s home at Craft’d Grounds, which is also home to French restaurant Herve’s and Sprout Artisan Bakery’s brand-new production kitchen and retail space.
