From a new bagel and coffee joint in Milton to a springtime pop-up in a heritage homestead, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out

Mirrorball Ministries
This coming weekend, Brisbane’s music community will rejoice with the grand opening of Mirrorball Ministries in West End on Saturday October 4. The newest project from the team behind Woolloongabba bar Can You Keep A Secret? (and its dearly missed South Brisbane sibling It’s Still A Secret), Mirrorball Ministries is taking shape inside the old AHEPA Hall on Boundary Street, converting the hall into a welcoming live-performance venue for emerging and established artists (both local and touring) of all genres. Mirrorball Ministries will boast two band rooms – the 80-person capacity True Love Club and a larger 250-person space – both equipped with its own bar and boasting a loungey 1980s-inspired aesthetic with homely Greek touches. This weekend’s grand-opening celebrations will be headlined by Church Improvisation Sessions, who will be performing a set of genre-bending improvisation arrangements. Doors open at 7:00 pm, with entry via donation. Keep your eyes peeled for an inside peek at Mirrorball Ministries soon!

Spring Block Party
On Sunday October 5, a trio of top West End bars and eateries will be teaming up to throw a street party to celebrate the onset of spring and the last long weekend of the year. Hardgrave Road haunts Cafe Disco, Mama Taco and Bar Hugo will be hosting a block party from 12:00 pm until late, putting on a range of food and drink specials, in addition to groove-setting DJ sets and live music. Cafe Disco will be serving sizzling skewers (lamb chapli, hariyali chicken and haloumi tikka) and golden pakoras, while also pouring natty wines and boozy highballs. Next door at Bar Hugo, expect to find a number of vermouth and pinxtos pairings, including Commune of Buttons vermut with anchovy, dill creme fraiche, salmon roe and garlic chive. Finally, Mama Taco will be slinging tacos filled with wagyu beef and cumin eggplant alongside its signature margaritas. See you there?

Dendy Coorparoo
Cinephiles, this one is for you – Dendy Cinemas at Coorparoo Square is officially reopening to the public tomorrow, Wednesday October 1, after a months-long stretch of inactivity. The cinema, which closed earlier this year after sustaining damage from Tropical Cyclone Alfred, will be wasting little time getting back into the groove, recommencing its weekly schedule of special offers – including student and seniors days, and its ever-popular budget Tuesdays. “We are beyond excited to have Dendy Coorparoo reopen its doors,” says Sharon Strickland, CEO of Dendy Cinemas. “Our team has worked tirelessly to bring the cinema back to life, and we can’t wait to see the foyer buzzing and the screens shining again. We’re especially grateful to our loyal Club Dendy members for their patience and support – as a thank you, we’ve extended all memberships by an additional 12 months, with tiers and points fully retained. This reopening is a celebration of community, resilience, and the joy of cinema.” Head to the Dendy Cinemas website for session times and ticket sales.

Blooms & Bottomless at Pompette
Glam inner-city French-inspired bistro Pompette will be bringing together flower arranging and French gastronomy for an exclusive one-day event, Blooms & Bottomless. Pompette is teaming up with one of the country’s favourite florists Daily Blooms Australia for the event, which will include a flower-arranging masterclass and a nine-course feast. Under the expert tutelage of a master florist, guests will get a crash course on floral design, working with seasonal blooms while sipping on a selection of French wines and cocktails. After this, attendees will be treated to Pompette’s Bottomless Bubbly Banquet – a culinary journey encompassing dishes like prawn crumpets with Marie Rose sauce, succulent steak frites and chicken ballotine stuffed with soft herbs. Blooms & Bottomless will take place on Saturday October 11 from 11:00 am – click here to secure your spot.
