From news of a new birria specialist in The Valley to Sunny Side Sandwich’s East Brisbane expansion, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Taco Joint
In exciting news for fans of saucy birria tacos, Mexican-inspired eatery Taco Joint will soon be expanding to Fortitude Valley, with a new venue set to open to the public later this month on Brunswick Street. Having cultivated a strong loyal following for its slow-cooked birria tacos at its Oxley HQ, the new bricks-and-mortar spot in Brisbane’s nightlife epicentre will give northside fans a closer spot to get their fix. In addition to the tacos, expect other birria-filled delights, such as beefy grilled-cheese toasties, birria ramen and loaded fries. We’ll be taking a closer look inside for you soon – stay tuned!

The Tiny Grocer
Over the weekend, a brand-new grocer with a twist opened in the heart of Camp Hill. The Tiny Grocer – the newest concept from the crew behind grazing and platter catering specialist Say Cheese – has taken over the home of the group’s Bennetts Road pizza joint, Spread. In its place sits a boutique neighbourhood grocer and takeaway food spot that the Say Cheese team hopes to evolve into Camp Hill’s go-to pit stop for quick meals and gourmet groceries. Inside you’ll find shelves stocked to tipping point with a curated assortment of gourmet goods from Australian and international suppliers – from artisan crackers, cheese and small goods to fresh bread, eggs and milk. A range of pre-prepared, take-home meals are also available, while The Tiny Grocer’s brigade of in-house chefs is also serving nostalgic corner-store style roast chicken and chips, fresh sandwiches and rotating seasonal salads. The venue isn’t forsaking pizza entirely – Spread fans will be able to pop in for a takeaway pizza on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Sunny Side Sandwiches East Brisbane
If you’ve cruised along the East Brisbane stretch of Stanley Street recently, you might have caught a bright flash of yellow out of the corner of your eye. Those quick enough for a head turn will have spied some banners belonging to Sunny Side Sandwiches, which we can confirm is opening a brand-new sandwich shop in East Brisbane – in the old Barra Boys spot – before the end of May. Following hot on the heels of Sunny Side’s recent refurb of its OG Windsor store, the team’s new site will follow a similar footprint, boasting the same internal dimensions and kitchen layout, but will have the added benefit of an additional 60-sqm of shaded seating. Clui Design will be working on the aesthetic, with a few unique touches (including a window looking into the baking area) distinguishing the East Brisbane site from its sibling outlets. Sunny Side will be running its full menu of sandwiches, including its famed schnitty sandwich and saucy Reuben. We’ll be taking a closer look once it opens.

Deli Disco at Joe’s Deli
Things are going to get loud at Joe’s Deli this Friday April 17, as the New York-inspired sandwich joint plays host to a one-night-only Boiler Room-style takeover. Linking up with Compa Tequila, Joe’s Deli will host Disco Deli from 3:15 pm, ditching its daytime persona in favour of a darker, after-hours vibe. The team will be welcoming hitmakers Yolanda Be Cool and up-and-coming selector Paluma, with the artists spinning back-to-back sets filled with disco grooves, heady house jams and dance floor fillers. Joe’s Deli will be slinging a number of its favourites for free alongside Compa Tequila. The catch? Entry is strictly limited to 100 guests – click here to register or you will miss out.
