From news of a new pub and sports bar in West End to an all-ages playground coming to Skygate, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Goldie’s Tavern
A West End watering hole is undergoing a metamorphosis, with the old Pig ‘N’ Whistle site on the corner of Melbourne Street and Merivale Street transforming into Goldie’s Tavern. The pub, now operated by Australian Venue Co., is being reimagined as a high-energy neighbourhood sports bar, one pitched towards big-game moments, group sessions and easy weekend drinks with mates. Once the makeover is complete, the venue will reopen with plenty of big screens, as well as pool and foosball tables. The kitchen will pump out fare like Philly cheesesteak wontons, South Melbourne dimmies, Cajun crab cake sandos, beef and Guinness pie, parmies, burgers and steaks, all of which can be enjoyed inside or in the spruced-up beer garden. Goldie’s Tavern will open to the public on Monday July 6, in time for State of Origin Game III next Wednesday.

The Assembly
The operator behind some of Brisbane City’s finest coffee spots is expanding its portfolio with a brand-new lobby cafe. The Assembly is the name of the newcomer, owned and run by the crew responsible for Gather, Public and Goldie. Conceived as a more coffee-focused, bespoke experience than the group’s other venues, The Assembly – located at the base of 69 Ann Street – will operate a bit differently compared to other lobby cafes. With seating for approximately 100, The Assembly will resemble a standalone cafe, perfect for meetings and catch-ups as well as grab-and-go collections. Equipped with a sleek new La Marzocco Strada S espresso machine, The Assembly will exclusively use Toby’s Estate coffee across multiple espresso blends, single-origin pours and alternative brewing offerings. Coffee-centric events are expected to also take place, with education classes and coffee omakase experiences on the cards. The Assembly is targeting a Monday July 13 opening date.

Area 51
Next year, Brisbane Airport’s Skygate precinct will welcome a new all-ages indoor playground, with Area 51 tapping the shopping, entertainment and lifestyle hub for its largest Australian location. The cavernous, purpose-built facility will span more than 7000 sqm and will house everything from climbing arenas, giant trampolines, ninja-style obstacle courses, sports courts, high ropes and toddler zones, plus its own in-house cafe. Geared towards family outings, birthday parties and even corporate events and evening sessions for adults, Area 51 at Skygate is shaping up to be a must-visit addition to the precinct – joining live-entertainment giant Fever and Landers Pocket among Skygate’s lifestyle additions – when it opens in late 2027. Stay tuned for more!
Pop World
Fortitude Valley’s nightlife precinct will soon receive an injection of uptempo energy when Hallmark Hospitality’s newly minted nightclub, Pop World, opens on Brunswick Street next month. Offering a mixture of thumping DJ sets, interactive experiences and pop-music-fuelled dance-floor mania, the new dance destination promises to be a go-to for Friday and Saturday night revelry. In addition to its two bars and central dance floor (where it’s nothing but wall-to-wall party hits), Pop World will boast three private karaoke suites with premium sound systems, an LED walkway, interactive photo booths and a number of VIP experiences. Pop World will be opening its doors very soon – keep your eyes peeled for updates.

Neighbour by Range, Newstead
Range Brewing is set to expand its growing portfolio of neighbourhood venues this August with the opening of Neighbour by Range at Gasworks Plaza in Newstead, transforming the former Botany site into a polished, community-focused bar inspired by the success of Patio and Rays. Designed in collaboration with Soma & Sol’s Kate McLean, the venue will pair a warm, suburban-inspired aesthetic with retro touches, an elevated food offering centred on Patio favourites (including the much-loved parmi), Range’s acclaimed beers, signature cocktails and an expanded wine list. While Neighbour shares the group’s vision of creating relaxed ‘third spaces’ where locals can gather for everything from casual drinks to special occasions, it will carve out its own bold identity, reinforcing Range Brewing’s strategy of building welcoming hospitality hubs that strengthen community connections beyond the brewery itself.
