From news of a new-age gelato spot with a tasty tofu twist to an American-style sports bar in The CityThe Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

sōfu
Brisbane’s dessert scene is set to get a taste of something a little different this August when sōfu opens its doors. This new-age gelato joint will specialise in creamy scoops made using silken tofu – a silky, less-sweet alternative to the traditional Italian-style gelato you may be used to. From a warm, timber-lined space on Edward Street (next door to Golden Avenue), the sōfu team will dispense a core range of Asian-inspired flavours made fresh on site, including original tofu, pandan, oolong milk tea and sweet corn, as well as rotating seasonal flavours. Alongside gelato, sōfu will be serving coffee, matcha and affogatos made using its tofu gelato. Once open, sōfu aims to become an easy everyday stop for a scoop, a coffee or a quiet moment of indulgence – stay tuned for more.

KG Sports Bar
With the FIFA World Cup reaching its zenith and the NRL and AFL seasons about to kick into high gear, a brand-new sports bar is debuting on the scene, equipped with 15 screens so punters can catch every second of the action. KG Sports Bar is opening to the public this week, taking cues from traditional American-style sports bars to deliver a high-energy hospitality experience featuring classic eats and thirst-quenching drinks. Accessed via the ground floor of Pullman and Mercure Brisbane King George Square (opposite Goldfinch), KG Sports Bar will serve a stacked menu of bites, ranging from wings, burgers and fries to onion rings, potato gems and jalapeno poppers. The bar will also offer the KG Sports Bar Hot Wing MVP Challenge, with brave diners invited to test their mettle against some of the hottest chilli sauces available – with chicken wings lathered in increasingly spicy hot sauces. KG Sports Bar is officially opening on Friday July 17.

The Book Pour will combine wine bar and book shop into one community-oriented venue | Credit: Jeff Siepman via Unsplash

The Book Pour
A novel concept is taking shape on Ruthven Street in Toowoomba, pairing the written word with local vino. The Book Pour is a bookshop and wine bar hybrid, owned and operated by Toowoomba local Taylor Hailes. Seeking a new purpose beyond her corporate career, Taylor decided to fill her cup with a project that could help strengthen the community while also bringing something new and exciting to the city. The Book Pour will be divided into two sections – a bookshop open by day, stocking a range of fiction titles across romance, fantasy, sci-fi, crime and horror, while the other half of the venue will house the bar, pouring a selection of wines sourced exclusively from Granite Belt wineries. While guests won’t be allowed to grab a book and read it then and there at the venue (no cracking spines – sorry, folks), they are encouraged to bring a book to enjoy alongside a glass of wine and a cheeseboard. There will also be a community bookshelf for readers to donate their flipped-through tomes for others to enjoy. A separate space at the rear of the venue will be used to host book clubs, community gatherings and private events. The Book Pour is looking to open at the end of the month – keep your eyes peeled for more.

YOMG Carindale
Melbourne-born burger and self-serve frozen-yoghurt dispensary Yo My Goodness (YOMG) recently opened a brand-new location at Westfield Carindale, its second Brisbane outpost (and fifth in Queensland) after its popular debut in Chermside. To celebrate the official launch of YOMG Carindale, the team is treating locals to a killer promo running until Wednesday July 15. From 8:00–10:00 pm tonight and tomorrow, YOMG’s self-serve frozen yogurt available for $2 per 100 grams. That means you’ve got room in the budget to go hard on extra toppings at the Goodness Bar.
