Want a bite of the Big Apple without boarding a plane? A brand-new New York-inspired deli and grill in Spring Hill might be just the ticket. Parklands Social at Mercure Brisbane Spring Hill on Wickham Terrace is taking inspirational cues from New York’s storied neighbourhood institutions – think buzzing social clubs and lively corner delis – to deliver a concept that offers something for everyone from invigorating coffee in the mornings to raucous dinner with friends. The 200-sqm restaurant boasts an aesthetic shaped by Mel Porter Design and fit-out by UNITA, blending sophistication with casual approachability via deep green banquettes, black and brown-veined marble, brushed brass fixtures, bespoke joinery and warm timbers. In the kitchen, executive chef Matthew Glover is eschewing American cliches while still nailing a sense of authenticity. Parklands Social’s debut menu features the likes of pastrami Benedicts (with house-cured pastrami smoked over Australian ironbark), meatball parm subs, matzo ball dumplings in chicken broth, and New York strip with celeriac puree. The Baker’s Duck
In great news for lovers of baked goods, one of Queensland’s best bakeries is expanding. The Baker’s Duck in Toowoomba, frequently hailed as one of – if not the – best bakeries in the entire state, is set to open a second location up the range. Soon, the team will lift the cloche on a new site on Railway Street in Toowoomba’s CBD, featuring a full cafe space, a larger glass-fronted production kitchen and, perhaps most importantly, dedicated off-street parking. The Baker’s Duck’s original Campbell Street location will continue to bake daily as normal, with bread-making, preparation and storage to be brought under one roof at Railway Street’s purpose-built, climate-controlled environment. Both locations will carry the same full menu (including crowd-favourite items like its strawberry cheesecake danish, Nutella twice-baked croissant, brown butter latte scrolls and banana chai pain suisse. Serata Al Tartufo at ATTIMI
Next month, Dario Manca’s widely acclaimed degustation restaurant ATTIMI will be hosting its annual truffle dinner, Serata Al Tartufo. The one-night-only event will be taking place on Tuesday August 11 from 5:30 pm, and will see the chef showcasing the best of Australia’s truffle season via a nine-dish, four-course menu. The evening will feature dishes topped with truffle Verduno Australia, including potato rosti topped with pan-seared Hokkaido scallop and lardo with fresh truffle, truffle-infused sourdough focaccia with porcini-mushroom butter, house-made tajarin (egg ribbon pasta) coated with truffle butter and truffled pecorino, Wimmera free-range duck roulade stuffed with prosciutto and truffle farce, and Italian “Cornetto” with truffle, Jerusalem artichoke and caramel.
