From news of a new location for a beloved noodle spot to a patisserie serving hyper-realistic dessertsThe Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

KOKA Patisserie
Have you ever heard of trompe l’oeil? The phrase, which means “to deceive the eye”, is used to describe an art technique that creates the illusion of a real object or scene. While typically used to describe hyper-realistic paintings, the term has gained traction in recent years to describe a new wave of desserts. On Monday August 24, Brisbane’s first trompe l’oeil patisserie KOKA will open a new bricks-and-mortar site at Westfield Mount Gravatt, inviting sweet tooths to come and sample a range of meticulously crafted fruit-shaped desserts. The concept debuted last year with a massively successful pop-up at Calamvale Central, with demand quickly outstripping the small team’s production capacity. Having spent the past six months expanding and training a larger team, KOKA’s founder Hajer Ahmad tells us the range will increase to nearly 20 creations (double the selection of the pop-up), evolving around seasonal produce, emerging trends and new flavour ideas. Returning favourites such as the hugely popular mango dessert will be available alongside retooled items like the berry – now filled with mixed-berry cream and lemon curd. The new location will be supplied from KOKA’s external kitchen, with pre-orders opening a week before launch. Check back soon for an in-depth look at KOKA Patisserie when it opens later this month.

Sunnybank’s Terrific Noodles will be opening a new location at Westfield Chermside soon | Credit: James Frostick

Terrific Noodles
One of Brisbane’s most beloved noodle joints is expanding. Terrific Noodles – the Sunnybank-based dispenser of authentic Xi’an street food – has announced a northward jump, revealing that it will soon open a new outpost at Westfield Chermside. While the official opening date is being kept under wraps, the team has confirmed that the new location will be located in the dining precinct near Event Cinemas, and will serve the same menu as its Market Square sibling – we’re talking glossy serves of hand-pulled biang biang noodles and flaky, meat-filled roujiamo (Chinese-style burgers). The venue’s official opening will be more of a cultural celebration than a restaurant launch, with live Chinese calligraphy, artists in traditional dress and plenty of giveaways planned for the big day. We’ll have more info on the official opening of Terrific Noodles soon!

Tea house and cocktail bar hybrid Thai Boi Sip Club will open on Redcliffe Parade next month | Credit: image supplied

Thai Boi Sip Club
Next month, the team behind one of Brisbane’s top Thai eateries will be applying an imaginative new spin to tea. In early September, Thai Boi will open Thai Boi Sip Club on Redcliffe Parade, taking tea from day to night. Part tea house and part cocktail bar, the venue will blend Asian-inspired tea traditions with contemporary Australian-style hospitality. By day, Thai Boi Sip Club will offer a beverage menu featuring handcrafted bubble teas, sparkling teas and seasonal creations infused with Thai tea, jasmine, oolong, matcha and hojicha. At night, the script flips and the venue transforms into a spritz bar slinging Thai milk tea spritzes, Thai tea martinis, hojicha highballs, wines and beer. The venue will feature a modern aesthetic, boasting attention-grabbing neon lighting, bubble-inspired design elements and chrome finishes. “Our vision wasn’t to open another bubble tea shop or another cocktail bar,” says Thai Boi founder Joe Kittiphat Nunyoi. “We wanted to create a place where tea tells two different stories. During the day it’s refreshing, comforting and social. At night, it becomes vibrant, sophisticated and made for sharing.” Thai Boi Sip Club is targeting a soft-opening period in early September – keep your eyes peeled for more.

Brisbane City Night Markets
One of the inner-city’s most popular weekly events is getting an upgrade. Goodwill Projects’ Brisbane City Markets at Reddacliff Place is set to undergo some changes in the coming weeks, with the Wednesday market set to expand to 80 vendors, alongside the addition to cooking demonstrations, cultural flavour months, guided tours and public play areas furnished with giant games and board game tables. That’s not all – the Brisbane City Markets will host a monthly Friday night market, with the first taking place on Friday September 25. “The expansion of a signature night market offering compliments the top of Brisbane’s Queen Street Mall and provides a unique offering for couples, families and visitors alike to explore the city – particularly as we build momentum toward the 2032 Brisbane Games,” says Goodwill Projects director Mark Power. We’ll have more on the night market’s offering closer to its debut.

Padel at Landers Pocket
Padel has become one of the world’s fastest-growing sports and Brisbane isn’t immune to the craze. In addition to two mini golf courses, high-tech driving bays and an award-winning gastro pub, Landers Pocket (located just near Skygate) will soon be home to a brand-new padel setup. Later this year, the thriving precinct will cut the ribbon on a brand-new set of four courts, built in partnership with Padel Brisbane. The courts will be a prelude to more planned additions to Landers Pocket, which include a Kick-n-Catch play zone, a 3000-person amphitheatre equipped for live-music performances and a 1000-person lawn for festivals.
