From news of a culinary collab from two of Brisbane’s best restaurants to a new bistro and bar from a Melbourne powerhouse, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …
Short Grain x The Fifty Six
Two of Brisbane’s finest restaurants will be collaborating on a must-attend dinner event next month, with Short Grain joining forces with The Fifty Six at Naldham House on Tuesday October 13. Short Grain’s Martin Boetz will share the kitchen with Gerald Ong, creating a share-style menu blending Southeast Asian flavours and refined culinary technique. The feast will start with appetite-whetting morsels like oysters served with two dressings (Short Grain’s green chilli nahm jim and The Fifty Six’s pink ginger mignonette) and tea-smoked quail egg, before expanding with starters like masterstock cold cut wagyu beef with hot and sour wingbean salad and drunken whitecut chicken. Mains will include dry-aged roast duck with red curry, served with stir-fried asparagus and crackling pork belly. The evening will be hosted by chef and Chef Eats Brisbane author Sam Parish – click here to secure your spot.

Johnny Gio’s Newmarket
Brisbane’s pizza scene is getting bigger by the day, with Sydney-born slice spot Johnny Gio’s announcing that it will open its third Brisbane venue later this year. The team has taken over a spot at Newmarket Village for the outpost, which is set to open in late October or early November. Locals can expect the same menu as Johnny Gio’s New Farm and Paddington venues, with highlights including crowd-favourite options like the Johnny Vodka, the Sonny Honey and the Instagram-famous Burrata Queen.

Musk Cafe and Bar
For the past few months, a new cafe in the heart of Teneriffe has been quietly cultivating a loyal following. Musk Cafe and Bar opened on Macquarie Street back in March after a relocation process saw the cafe shift from its flood-affected digs in Milton. The original spirit has been transferred over to the new site, with the team dishing up all-day brunch boasting global influences (including its chilli scrambled eggs with gochujang-glazed chorizo, French-style soft scrambled eggs with snow crab, and French toast with Marukyu Koyamaen matcha), specialty coffee from Five Senses and signature drinks. The biggest drawcard has been Musk’s -86 Degrees Dirty – a take on the viral Dirty Coffee made with a hot ristretto poured over cold milk in a glass frozen to –86°C. Now that Musk Cafe and Bar has settled into a nice rhythm, the team is finally celebrating its grand opening with a free coffee day on Saturday September 26. The crew will be slinging free cups of silky brews from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm, so be sure to pop in early to beat the crowds.

High Road Bar & Grill
In case you missed the news last week, Melbourne hospitality group The Mulberry Group – the team behind venues including Hazel, Dessous, Liminal and Lilac Wine – is making its Queensland debut with High Road Bar & Grill, a 100-seat bistro and 45-seat wine bar opening next month at the base of Novotel Brisbane South Bank. Led by head chef Gareth Woolcock, High Road will centre on Queensland produce, provenance and woodfire cooking, with a menu spanning flame-grilled fish and steak, snacks, sides and traditional-style pastas, alongside an Australian and European wine list, local craft beer and produce-driven cocktails by beverage manager Kayla Saito. Drawing design cues from Queenslander homes, the venue will feature timber, leather, tiles and burgundy detailing, with Toleman hoping High Road becomes a neighbourhood meeting point for locals and workers alike while adding to Brisbane’s already thriving dining scene. Flora
Brisbane’s suburban bar scene is set to expand next month, with 30-seat European-inspired wine bar Flora taking shape in the Logan Road space formerly home to Pour & Tipple in Holland Park West. Operated by former Ramona Trattoria sous chef Dylan Smith, the neighbourhood-focused bar will aim for a convivial, walk-in-friendly feel, with an old-world interior of dark greens, timber, leather and warm brown tones. Ashley-Maree Kent from Ramona is co-consulting on a menu spanning Spanish, Portuguese, French and Italian influences, with simple snacks and small plates including cured meats, dips, breads, bombas, seafood, pasta and dessert, much of it available by the piece so diners can tailor their meal. The drinks list will feature around 25 wines curated with help from Convivium Wine, alongside cocktails, aperitifs, digestifs and plenty of non-alcoholic options. You can read all about it here.
