Samhain, All Hallows’ Eve, Fright Night – whatever you call it, the northern hemisphere holiday has nevertheless made its way to Australia. While most of us no longer use Halloween to signal the end of harvest or commune with the dead, the festivity has instead grown roots here as a chance to don a disguise, throw a party and show our appreciation for the horror genre. As a holiday still growing legs in Australia, we’ve hand-selected a few Halloween-y events taking place in Brisbane this month so you don’t have to.

The Night Before Halloween Masquerade Ball, Melt Festival

Brisbane’s annual festival of queer arts and culture kicked off earlier this month, bringing a stacked program of performances, experiences and events to the city. Once again, Melt Festival’s The Night Before Halloween Masquerade Ball returns, taking over West End’s inclusive cocktail bar Come To Daddy for a night of spooky drag, great music and horrifically good fun. The party will feature performances from drag performers including the horror-glam of Inkubus, the bold and fearless IAM and the high-drag, vintage horror of Sylvester Noir. Rock up in your best costume or grab one of the masquerade masks available for purchase on the night – funds will straight to Lifeline by the way, so you can party the night away knowing your celebration is for a good cause.

Candlelight: A Haunted Evening of Halloween Classics, St John’s Cathedral

The haunting audio-scapes of Samhain finds a fitting home within the glowing chamber of St John’s Cathedral this Halloween. With only the glow of candles to go by, the next in the Cathedral’s Candlelight Concerts series will be dedicated to Halloween classics, from the theme songs of The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Exorcist to Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and Camille Saint-Saëns’ ‘Dance Macabre’. With a reputation for selling out fast and late arrivals denied entry, so early is the name of the game – don’t say we didn’t warn you.
