Say hello to Uni’s – Surfers Paradise’s new vegan-friendly gluten-free bakehouse

Surfers Paradise has scored a sweet new arrival with the opening of Uni’s Bakehouse, a bright and playful bakery from Winnie and Nelson Ng. Tucked just off the main strip, the pastel-hued spot is designed as a haven for both the vegan and gluten-free communities, though Winnie insists it’s just as much for anyone who simply loves good baking. Here’s everything you need to know …

Breathing new life into Orchid Avenue is Uni’s Bakehouse. The name is a nod to Winnie’s Chinese name and the couple’s vision of creating a space that feels welcoming and a little bit special. After years running Blendlove in Southport, they recognised a gap for a bakery that not only catered to dietary needs but delivered flavour and indulgence in spades. “Without butter, you can still make something just as delicious,” Nelson assures us.

And judging from the line out the door, he’s right. The cabinet is stacked with cookies in flavours like caramel popcorn, salted peanut butter and choc, almond, and oatmeal raisin, plus brownies, banana bread and more inventive specials such as Oreo cream or even a pistachio-laced Dubai chocolate.

Savoury fans aren’t left behind, there’s house-made vegan focaccia in tasty combinations such as truffle mushroom, pesto and tomato and avo with almond fetta. Rounding out the offering is croissants from Sydney’s Oh My Days.

On the drinks front, you’ll find organic Bun Coffee from Byron Bay, alongside playful signatures like Biscoff lattes, black-sesame lattes and strawberry matcha. We’re told there’s a few more matcha-inspired specials too.

With its sunny yellow-and-blue fit-out, a cabinet brimming with treats and Winnie and Nelson smiling from behind the counter, Uni’s Bakehouse turns dietary alternatives into the main event, adding fresh colour and flavour to Surfers Paradise’s cafe scene.
