For years, it was one of those shopfronts you barely noticed – a narrow, long-vacant space on the Currumbin strip that felt permanently between chapters. Once a chiropractor, then nothing at all, it sat quietly as beachgoers streamed past, the ocean just metres away. Now, it’s been given a bright, joyful reset as Elly’s Gelato, a tiny hole-in-the-wall scoop shop that feels perfectly suited to its seaside surroundings.
Elly’s Gelato is small by design but big on personality. The name is a nod to nearby Elephant Rock, a much-loved Currumbin landmark and a detail locals will instantly recognise. A crisp red-and-white fit-out nods to surf flags and summers past, while clean lines and minimalist touches keep the focus on what’s happening behind the glass. A couple of stools out front invite you to linger – the kind of spot made for post-swim scoops while the waves roll by.
The offering keeps things refreshingly simple. Behind the glass, you’ll find a rotating lineup of gelato and sorbet in flavours that lean classic but never boring – think zesty lemon, juicy blood orange, pistachio, passionfruit cheesecake, cookies and cream, tiramisu, Turkish delight, honeycomb, coffee, mango, licorice, peppermint chocolate chip and more. It’s scoop-by-scoop goodness, best enjoyed slowly, preferably with sandy feet.
On a hot Currumbin day, Elly’s Gelato is exactly the kind of easy, grab-and-go treat the strip has been missing, inviting you to cool down, slow your pace and savour the moment. A sweet new addition, indeed.
