There’s a moment – somewhere between the first bite and the inevitable second – where you realise you’ve absolutely nailed your order. No regrets, no notes, just a quiet sense of satisfaction that borders on smugness. That’s the feeling Smug Club is built on, a new sandwich spot from Brodie and Andrew Howard landing in Coomera with a bit of swagger and no interest in playing it safe. Here’s what we know so far …

The husband-and-wife duo behind Bear Boy Espresso in Helensvale and Windsor are stripping things back for Smug Club, focusing on one thing – sandwiches done properly. Not the sad, filler kind tucked onto a cafe menu as an afterthought, but the main event. Big, flavour-forward builds made with quality ingredients, proper technique and a bit of a flex. As the team puts it, there are “no humble sandwiches” here.

The opening menu is set to be tight – just eight sandwiches – but each one is designed to hold its own. Think chicken schnitzel, house-made meatballs and a hot honey salami situation with pistachio that hits all the right notes. There’s a veg option in the mix too, all stacked into focaccia baked fresh daily by Pixel Bakehouse. It’s a simple concept, sure, but that’s kind of the point – do less, do it better.

On the drinks side, we’re told things will get a little playful. House-made sodas in flavours like cherry, strawberry and lychee (made by fermenting fruit into syrups) will sit pretty alongside specialty cold foams and matcha.

The space itself is designed by Space Cubed Design Studio and is set to lean into big sandwich energy – casual, open-air and built for both quick grabs and lingering lunches. Occupying a prime corner position within the new Coomera Collective precinct (right opposite the park), it’s set to bring that easy, community-driven feel, with outdoor seating designed for sunny afternoons and post-sandwich hangs.

While the southern Gold Coast is already stacked with dining options, the northern end has been quietly waiting for something like this. Brodie and Andrew saw the gap – and decided to fill it with focaccia, flavour and a whole lot of attitude.

Smug Club is slated to open mid-May, we’ll bring you a closer look when it’s ready to roll. In the meantime, start drooling
