After ten years of making its mark on the Gold Coast dining scene with punchy East-Asian flavours and a sultry, moody fit-out, Broadbeach dining icon Mamasan has been reborn, completely reimagined from the interiors to the menu, and it’s ready to welcome you back in style. Step inside the all-new Mamasan …
When Mamasan first opened its doors in 2015, it helped shape a new era of dining on the Gold Coast. Fast forward ten years, and owners Lauren and JP Duitsch decided it was time for Mamasan to evolve too, closing the Broadbeach institution’s doors temporarily to embark on a full-scale renovation. The ambitious transformation was envisioned by Space Cubed Design Studio and realised by Zero9 Constructions. While the moody, textural aesthetic that defined Mamasan remains central to its identity, the new design has been heightened with layers of indulgent detail.
Step inside and the impact is instant – dramatic quartzite stone, Japanese charred-timber panelling, sculpted banquettes and considered lighting combine to create an atmosphere that moves effortlessly from leisurely lunches to refined evening dining, all underpinned by a sense of intimacy and warmth that encourages guests to linger.
What began as a renovation quickly evolved into a complete rebuild after the team secured a neighbouring tenancy. The expanded footprint now stretches through to Elizabeth Street, increasing capacity from 104 to 145 and creating a striking new dining space that can host up to 40 guests — filling a gap in the beachside suburb’s private-dining offering. Alongside the refreshed main dining room, the redesign introduces a stunning 10-seat private dining room and a sun-kissed alfresco deck, which can be thrown open with bifold windows or enclosed for year-round comfort.
“Reaching our 10-year anniversary gave us the opportunity to reimagine every detail of Mamasan,” says Lauren. “The new design allows for more experiences and memories to be made and a stronger connection between our spaces.”
While the setting is indeed spectacular, Mamasan is far more than just a pretty face. Under the direction of executive chef Sebastian Tan – who brings 18 years of global experience across acclaimed kitchens including Hakkasan at The St. Regis Al Mouj Muscat, Silks at Crown Sydney and Sydney’s JINJA – Mamasan’s upgraded menu balances much-loved favourites with bold new additions.Signature dishes such as the spanner-crab tortellini dumplings, lamb ribs, pork bao and Korean fried chicken return alongside new highlights like yellowfin-tuna tacos with ginger ponzu, Hong Kong-style Typhoon Shelter lobster, tea-smoked wagyu-beef ribs and roasted duck red curry with lychee and Thai eggplant.
Sebastian, who earned a Gold Medal at the 2023 World Master Chefs Competition for Cantonese Cuisine, says the menu is about honouring Mamasan’s legacy while expanding its story. His influence first turned heads at BabyMama, the Duitschs’ sassy sibling spot in Nobby Beach, where dishes like dry-aged duck garnered rave reviews. Now, many of those flavours have returned, reimagined for the next era of Mamasan.
The bar, too, has grown with the venue, pouring an expanded line-up of sake, wine, spirits and cocktails, crafted to carry guests seamlessly from breezy lunches on the deck to late-night celebrations in the dining room.
“This isn’t just a renovation – it’s a complete reimagining,” says JP. “The transformation creates new possibilities for the venue while preserving the sophisticated yet welcoming atmosphere that has made it a destination for our loyal regulars and new diners.”
