From news of a new Asian-inspired brunch spot in Fish Lane to an Argentinian steakhouse for The CityThe Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Goodside
Fish Lane’s food scene has welcomed a newcomer this week, with Fanda Group (the crew behind Southside and Marlowe) opening Asian-inspired brunch spot Goodside under the train bridges at the laneway’s leafy heart. Taking over the kiosk previously inhabited by Kiki, Goodside is Southside’s sunny counterpart – serving an all-day menu influenced by the flavours of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Designed for speed and accessibility, Goodside’s menu is stacked with high-quality and convenient options like prawn ‘har gow’ katsu sandos with jalapeno salsa and Kikkoman caramel, ‘Lu Ruu Fan’ Taiwanese-style pork rice bowls with sticky soy and Asian greens, and baked coffee buns filled with cappuccino custard. Goodside’s beverage list will be anchored by coffee and juices, with a number of specialty beverages – including lychee iced tea with coconut cold foam and iced coffee laced with dirty iced tea and condensed-milk cold foam – also available. Fish Lane has become one of Brisbane’s most exciting precincts and Goodside felt like a natural next step for us,” says Fanda Group owner David Flynn. “There’s a real community there – locals, students, people passing through on their way to the gallery, museum or work in The City. We wanted to create something that truly belonged to the neighbourhood.” To celebrate its launch, Goodside will host a grand-opening party from 8:00 am on Saturday June 27, featuring 200 free Goodside iced coffees, food samples, live entertainment and pitch-perfect vibes.

The seasonal shift is bringing more than cooler mornings and colder nights – a new crop of produce is hitting restaurant kitchens, with menus across town being updated accordingly. To celebrate the onset of winter, West End restaurant Venner is linking up with Mapleton Public House and The Falls Farm for a one-night-only dinner event this Wednesday June 10. The evening will see the Venner and Mapleton Pub teams plate up a selection of dishes built around winter ingredients – think barbecue cabbage tart with lovage and oyster emulsion, young kohlrabi with smoked mackerel, avocado and lemon verbena, barley porridge with smoked pork broth and warrigal greens, and Northern Rivers duck with native plum and tamarillo. On the drinks front, a pair of special libations will be available, including a rosella margarita and cumquat old fashioned. Seats are available for $130 per person – click here to make a reservation.

Midtown is pouring a new martini riff in collaboration with Shake & Stir Theatre Co | Credit: Judit Losh for Midtown

Out, Damned Spot! at Midtown
A NYC-inspired laneway bar and a cutting-edge theatre company is collaborating on a pre-show sip. Shake & Stir Theatre Co has linked up with Midtown on a limited-edition cocktail that is a must try for anyone venturing to QPAC to catch Shake & Stir’s gripping production of Macbeth. Inspired by Lady Macbeth’s infamous descent into guilt and madness, Out, Damned Spot! elevates the clean and briny elegance of the traditional dirty martini with a single drop of ‘bloody gin’ – a crimson streak that bleeds through the cocktail for dramatic effect.

San Telmo Brisbane
Melbourne’s acclaimed asado-inspired steakhouse San Telmo is making its Queensland debut this month, with the San Telmo Group set to open its first venue outside Victoria at 60 Edward Street in The City before the end of June. The restaurant (designed by Kate Archibald with interiors inspired by Buenos Aires dining rooms) will centre around a custom charcoal parrilla grill, where head chef Mikey Dalton will cook premium cuts from O’Connor’s Premium Beef alongside dry-aged specialties. The menu will showcase a contemporary take on Argentinian asado, classic snacks like empanadas, indulgent desserts (including San Telmo’s famed flan), and a beverage list featuring imported Argentinian wines, Fernet-Branca and Quilmes cerveza. Operating seven days a week from 11:30 am until late, the venue aims to bring the generous spirit, theatre and flavour of an authentic Argentinian table to Brisbane. Read all about it here.

Lune Croissanterie
Lune Croissanterie is bringing its cult-favourite pastries to the Gold Coast, with the acclaimed bakery working on a local outpost at Pacific Fair. The new store marks a milestone for founder Kate Reid and co-founder Cam Reid, who were drawn north by strong demand from Gold Coast customers and the opportunity to create a bespoke, coastal-inspired bakery unlike any in the Lune network. Featuring lighter interiors, outdoor dining and a dramatic design centrepiece tipped to become one of Pacific Fair’s most photographed attractions, the bakery will serve Lune’s signature croissants, cruffins and seasonal specials, including an exclusive pastry created to celebrate the opening.
